3  Scientists classify animals based on features they share.  Features include coloring, type of teeth, and number of legs.  One feature scientists use to classify animals is whether or not the animal has a backbone.

6  Animals without a Backbone  Animals without Backbones are called Inverteb rates  Multicellular, no cell walls, reproduce sexuall y, heterotrophic.

7  Sponges, Anemones and Jellyfish, Worms,  Snails, Clams and Octopuses,  Starfish and Urchins, Insects,  Spiders, Ticks, Lobsters,  Crabs, and Crayfish are all invertebrates

8  Animals with a Backbone  Animals with Backbones are called Vertebrates

9  Vertebrates Well-developed internal skeleton, highly developed brain; have advanced nervous system, outer covering of protective cellular skin.

10 Scientists divide vertebrates into five main groups.  fish  Birds  Amphibians  Reptiles  Mammals are all Vertebrates
