Keith Curry Lance is the Director of Library Research Services for Colorado State Library 1985 he received his doctorate in sociology from the University of North Texas and began working at University of Colorado 1993 he published the first Colorado Study which was then replicated in 16 states. This body of research set out to prove the correlation between student learning/achievement and the quality of the media program within the school.
4
Determine the correlation between school library media programs and student achievement. “The size of the library in terms of its staff and its collection is a direct predictor of reading scores.”(Lance, 1). A professionally trained library media specialist The ratio of spending per student.
5
Teacher/LMS collaboration Information literacy skills taught Reading scores increase by up to 21%
6
A lot of school librarians come up to me after presentations and thank me for this research. They’re grateful to have something in the way of 'evidence’ they can use to demonstrate their impact.” (Atcherman)

E ffective teaching and learning can be strengthened through a strong media program A qualified and trained library media specialist who plays a strong part in the school leadership can impact the overall success of the library media program. The administration plays a key role in the overall success of the school media program.

Students in schools where there was a full time librarian scored average or above average on the California Achievement Test. The more often students received instruction in information literacy skills the higher the test scores In Colorado the “collection explained 21% variation in 7 th grade Iowa Tests of Basic Skills reading scores.” (US) In Illinois high schools, eleventh grade ACT scores are highest when there was Librarian/teacher collaboration Elementary schools with flexible scheduled libraries score 10% better in reading and 11% better in writing At every grade level schools with internet connected computers and access to educational databases scored 8% higher in reading and 11% higher in writing School districts who spend the most on their libraries tend to have higher scores on standardized tests.
9
“A school library that is adequately staffed, resourced, and funded can lead to higher student achievement regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community.” US National Commission on Libraries and Information Science

LIBRARIES WORK!!!
11
“S chool librarians must exercise leadership to create the sort of working environment they need to help students and teachers succeed.”(Lance, 2). The LMS should meet frequently with principal and attend faculty meetings The LMS should serve on standards and curriculum meetings The LMS should meet frequently with staff in order to collaborate on projects and assess the overall needs of the students The LMS should teach information literacy skills
12
Principals determine school library media program quality as much as librarians do Administration plays the support role and should help the LMS in lobbying for funds Allow the LMS to assume a leadership role in the school The administration should encourage the overall use of the program
13
Students who utilize the media center achieve higher scores in standardized testing A good media program must have funding and a qualified support staff Everyone has a role in creating a positive and successful school media program! Library Media Centers are vital to our students education and must be funded and promoted!
