1 12/15/04Team Meeting Physics Analysis NSTX Team Meeting S.M. Kaye 12/15/04 Publications –Some IAEA papers submitted to Nuc. Fusion –T. Biewer article submitted to PRL –S. Medley article on fast ion losses appeared in PoP Fission chamber measurements appear to have drifted from 2002 to 2004 Scintillation detector measurements appear to be stable L. Roquemore to investigate Confinement and Transport –ITPA work (Kaye) Confinement results presented at ITPA meeting Data from 90 H-mode shots, 16 L-mode shots submitted to 0D ITPA databases Focus for Fall ’05 H-mode/ITB workshop for CDB&M is how aspect ratio affects threshold, confinement scalings (S. Kaye to take lead) Much interest in completing NSTX/MAST identity scaling exp’ts, dimensionless variable scaling exp’ts.

2 12/15/04Team Meeting –Neoclassical Theory GTC-NEO undergoing “final” benchmarking (Wang, Rewoldt) –Include finite banana width – non-local effects –Preliminary calculations on “reversed shear” discharges performed NBI – driven effects: fast-thermal ion friction terms (Houlberg) –Rigorous treatment of high order velocity moments –Messy velocity space integral solution by Hirshman –Inclusion of these terms and collisionality lead to lower NB shielding effects and moderate increase in NBCD –NCLASS updated (in v b /v e =0 but v b /v i >1 limit); ready to incorporate into TRANSP »Will be upgraded further to include finite v b /v e and v b /v i >>1 –“NSTX provided seed that was most critical element of this work” –Gyrokinetic Calculations Linear growth rates, mode structures from GS2 (Redi) –Monotonic vs “reversed” shear comparisons –Sensitivity analysis to be done –Focus on understanding of microtearing Non-linear calculations –GYRO in electrostatic limit (Mikkelsen) »ExB shearing stabilizing, but still leaves transport at levels similar to exp’tl. values »Will incorporate E r from GTC-NEO »Can simulate electromagnetic effects –Will exercise GTC in electrostatic limit (Wang) »Generalized geometry available »Electromagnetic effects longer term

3 12/15/04Team Meeting Equilibrium and MHD –EFIT reconstructions with MSE constraint operational (Sabbagh) Need to resolve small code detail Processed only one shot so far, but plan to have every shot with MSE (with and without toroidal rotation) written to tree by PAC meeting Need to rebuild Green’s function table for 2005 equilibria Plan to complete interface to TRANSP p(r) prior to start of run –Global Mode Stabilization group met to develop schedule for EF/RWM control system work –Fast tangential SXR camera (Stratton) Observe 1/1 mode leading to “small sawtooth” in OH discharges Reconnection on current relaxation time scale (100s ms) rather than Kadomtsev reconnection time (  s) PEST/PEST3 (Fredrickson), M3D (Breslau/Park) RF –HHFW: TORIC enhancement (Bonoli, Wright, Phillips et al.) Rewritten to be valid in HHFW regime (kinetic model valid for all k   i ) Implementing on Petrel cluster Calculated absorption profile consistent with data (broader at higher k tor ) Calculations not consistent with observed power absorption (calcs give comparable absorption for 7, 14 m -1 @ >95%) Further benchmarking needed with AORSA, CURRAY (on same cases) Additional upgrades underway (coupling to FPPRF/TRANSP, handling arbitrary f(v) self-consistently, extend plasma to antenna)

4 12/15/04Team Meeting –EBW Multi-tasking going on –Need to coordinate and identify a case everyone can benchmark NSTX focus on AORSA1D/GENRAY/CQL3D –AORSA1D (ORNL) for coupling: need to raise priority for development and usage –GENRAY/CQL3D: well-benchmarked for ECH, need to benchmark for EBW Fundamental (?) differences between GENRAY/CQL3D and BANDIT2 (Culham), an integrated C/RT/FP treatment –NSTX to supply data for benchmarking
