Colorful History 1519 Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes brought painted horses to the New World. Comanche Indians raised and bred painted ` horses. 1962 Rebecca Lockhart formed the American Paint Stock Horse Association which later became the APHA. 1974 The American Junior Paint Horse Association was formed. TodayAPHA represents 80,000 people and 953,000 horses in 40 nations and territories. AjPHA has over 6,900 active members.

Tobiano Pattern Dark color covers one or both flanks, and extends down the neck and chest giving the appearance of a shield. All four legs are white. Spots are regular and distinct as ovals or round patterns, Head markings are like those of a solid-colored horse-- solid, or with a blaze, strip, star or snip. Generally:

Overo Pattern White will not cross the back of the horse. At least one and often all four legs are dark. White is irregular, and is rather scattered or splashy. Head markings are distinctive, often bald-faced, apron-faced or bonnet-faced. Generally:

Tovero Pattern Dark pigmentation around the ears. One or both eyes blue. Chest and flank spots vary in size and are often accompanied by smaller spots. Spots, varying in size, at the base of the tail. Generally:
