THE DYNAMIC EARTH Chapter 3 CP ENVL SCI
2
The Earth as “a System”
3
Earth as a System
5
GEOSPHERE: Seismic Waves: _________________________ ___________________.

Complete this map!
7
Plate Tectonics
8
Earthquakes A ____________ is a break in Earth’s crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another. Earthquakes: The ___________ ___________ is used by scientists to measure the amount of energy released by an earthquake. The measure of energy released by an earthquake is called ________________.
9
Volcanoes A volcano is a mountain built from ___________, or _____________, that rises from Earth’s interior to the surface, and can occur on land or in the sea. Volcanoes are often located near ____________________________ where plates are either colliding or separating from one another.
10
Weathering and Erosion _________________________ is the process in which the materials of Earth’s surface are loosened, dissolved, or worn away. ________________transports the materials form one place to another by a natural agent, such as wind, water, ice or gravity.
11
ATMOSPHERE: Composition of the atmosphere Located within 30 km of the surface Atmosphere also insulates Earth’s surface Gases can be added to and removed from the atmosphere through living organisms Air pressure Air also becomes less dense with elevation, so breathing at higher elevations is more difficult.
12
Think Bubble Why do planes fly as much as 10 km above the ground? What is the difference between atmospheric conditions near the Earth’s surface and atmospheric conditions in the upper atmosphere?
13
Layers of the Atmosphere The Thermosphere: The Mesosphere: The Stratosphere: The Troposphere:
14
Energy in the Atmosphere Radiation is the energy that is transferred as electromagnetic waves, such as visible light and infrared waves. Conduction is the transfer of energy as heat through a material. Convection is the movement of matter due to differences in density that are caused by temperature variations an can result in the transfer of energy as heat.
16
The Greenhouse Effect Without the greenhouse effect: The most abundant greenhouse gases: The quantities of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere:
17
HYDROSPHERE: The hydrosphere includes all of the water on or near Earth’s surface. The water cycle is the continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean.
18
Estimate the percentage of Earth’s water that is contained in saltwater and the percentage that is contained in fresh water.
19
Earth’s Oceans The largest ocean: The deepest point on the ocean floor, ___________________________, is found in the Pacific Ocean. This is in the __________________ and is 11,033m below sea level which is deeper than Mount Everest is tall. Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean One of the most important functions of the world ocean is to absorb and store energy from sunlight which in turn regulates temperatures in Earth’s atmosphere.
20
Ocean water The difference between ocean water and fresh water is that ocean water contains more salts. __________________is a measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid. Most of the salt in the ocean is sodium chloride Which is made up mostly of the elements, sodium and chloride
21
Currents Surface Currents: _____________________________ _____________________________ Wind driven and result from global wind patterns. Surface currents can be warm or cold water currents. However, currents of warm water and currents of cold water do not readily mix with one another. Deep Currents are stream like movements of water that flow very slowly along the ocean floor.
22
Fresh Water and Ground Water Fresh water Icecaps and glaciers The rest is found in places like lakes, rivers, wetlands, the soil and atmosphere. A river system :_______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________. Ground Water Rain and melting snow sink into the ground and run off the land. Most of this water trickles down through the ground and collects as groundwater. ONLY 1 percent of all the water on Earth. Fulfills the human need for fresh drinking water Supplies agricultural and industrial needs.
23
BIOSPHERE The materials that organisms require must be continually recycled. Gravity allows a planet to maintain an atmosphere and to cycle materials. The biosphere is located near Earth’s surface because most of the sunlight is available near the surface. Plants and Algae The energy used by organisms must be obtained in the biosphere and must be constantly supplied for life to continue. When an organism dies, its body is broken down and the nutrients in it become available for use by other organisms. This flow of energy allows life on Earth to continue to exist.
