How to access and display WAV data

Water Action Volunteers… Compile environmental data on Wisconsin rivers and streams Use data gathered by volunteers like you Post this volunteer data online for use in research Grow the database Click the picture to link to the site… h t t p : / / w w w. u w e x. e d u / e r c / w a v d b / s e a r c h. c f m

Choosing a search method You may choose to search by Site, County, Waterbody Name, or Hydrologic Unit Code I chose “Waterbody Name” You can multiple select using the “Ctrl” key

Choosing the parameters Choosing a date range is optional I chose none The parameters are those water variables you wish to study I chose 5 of them

Choosing the data format We’ll choose Excel Spreadsheet Then press the “View Data” button At this point you will have an Excel spreadsheet containing the data you asked for

Selecting columns to graph I have used the “Ctrl” key and the mouse drag to highlight Date, D.O. mg/L, and Transparency (cm) Make sure you have the column headings highlighted too, so your graphs make more sense when you finally see them

Inserting a graph Choose the “Insert” tab from the main menu Let’s use a simple Line graph

Choose your chart layout In order to place a title on your graph choose the “Design” tab and then the “Chart Layout” that has labeled gridlines and space for a chart title

Finishing the graph Type in your descriptive title RIGHT-CLICK each graph to insert a trend line

Trend lines Choose the “Linear” radio button Check off the “Display Equation on chart” box

Final touches You can stretch your graph and center the title You can move your equations to better locations It is a good idea to delete the Y-intercepts of graphs having dates on the X-axis. Why?

Some “tricks” If you choose data that isn’t adjacent to the headings, simply copy the first row headings into the row directly above your desired data RIGHT CLICK the cell called 1 to highlight all of the headings Then choose COPY

Some “tricks” Then choose the row directly above the block of data you want I RIGHT-CLICK cell 7 and then choose PASTE I now have my headings above the block of Dorn Road data I can now make more graphs BTW, graphs can be copied and pasted into Word documents!

Practice LESSON 1: Make the graph shown on the previous slides LESSON 2: Try to make this graph:
