2 Salt Lake County: This is the place For a long time, ancient Shoshone and Ute Native Americans used Salt Lake County to hunt. The first white men in the area were William H. Ashley trappers. The first permanent settlers came to the area in 1847, they were the Mormon pioneers lead by Brigham Young, and after they arrived they settled several surrounding towns. 3 Quick Facts: Salt Lake County is 764 square miles! It’s population in 2010 was 1,029,655. That’s a lot of people! It was named for the Great Salt Lake In 2002, the winter Olympics took place in Salt Lake. The county seat (government center) of Salt Lake County, is Salt Lake City. 4 Ghost Towns: Most Ghost towns in Salt Lake County were mining towns. Some ghost towns in salt lake county include: Alta Bingham Copperfield Alta was named for it’s altitude and was a mine for silver ore. By 1895, the mines were depleted and the area became a ghost town. Alta was a very violent town with 500 murders taking place in one year! Alta in 1925
