Advanced Design Principles (otherwise known as PARC)

Five Principles 1.Balance 2.Rhythm 3.Unity 4.Emphasis 5.White Space

Balance In terms of design the weight of elements should be distributed in a visually appealing way. Balance in design is similar to balance in physics.

A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be).

Rhythm Connects elements in a design and guides a viewer’s eye from one item to the next. It is movement or variation characterized by the regular recurrence or alternation of different quantities or conditions.

In simpler words, it's just like pattern – it shows that the design has a 'beat' or 'flow' going with it. A plain white box has almost no rhythm what so ever.

If you wish to create interest, any repeating element should include a degree of variation.

Unity in a design refers to the visual linking of various elements of the work. Unity

Unity pulls together all of the individual elements, making the design look like a single unit. Unity

Emphasis Element sizes should be determined by its relative importance. Emphasis gives a design interest, counteracting confusion and monotony. Dominance can be applied to one or more of the elements to give emphasis.

Emphasis Where certain elements in a design stand out more than others.

White Space “White space is the art of nothing. White space is the absence of text and graphics.” It breaks up the elements on the page. It provides visual breathing room for the eye. Add white space to make a page less cramped, confusing, or overwhelming. White space doesn’t actually have to be white. It gets its name from the early days of graphic design where most printing was done on white paper. White space can be black, blue, red, etc. what ever color the background is. White space is also referred to as “negative space”.

The result is that one is naturally drawn to the picture first before going back to the text. You’re totally controlling what they look at and what they should be thinking of. When there’s flow and order, you can expect your audience to fully understand what it is you’re trying to tell them. White Space This empty space helps establish a smooth flow of elements since there’s less clutter. http://24slides.com/blog/category/presentation-styles/

Some things to consider… Successful design is based on paying close attention to detail, looking at the total picture, and analyzing the work of other professional designs.

Look at Examples –Look for examples of work that you like and analyze what makes it good. –Look for examples of work that you don’t like and figure out what makes it bad. –Keep copies of work that you like for inspiration later.

Your turn … Can you analyze these ads and name some advanced design principles?

Ad Activity You will work in a group to present each of the Advanced Design Principles. Each person will choose one principle and find an example from your magazine. Some of you may be doing more than one. You will present your ads in a presentation program with an explanation of the design principles you chose. Someone will need to work on setting up the opening slide and another on the References slide.

Ad Activity cont. You will scan the 5 ads for placing in your presentation. You will cite your ads at the end of the presentation on a References slide. Each person will be responsible for citing their own magazine ad on the slide. Record the name and date of the magazine and the product of each ad. Refer to your MLA handout in the Miscellaneous section of your binder for citing from a magazine (it is different format than citing graphics from the internet).

Ad Activity cont. Setting up your presentation: –PowerPoint should contain a Title slide, 5 slides for ads and explanation, and a Reference slide (that’s a total of 7 slides). At the end of this presentation is my references slide you may use as an example. –The 5 slides will have your ad and your description of how the ad demonstrates the particular design principle you chose. This is two grades, one Daily and one Major.
