3 Tints and shades Color has value. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Tints are a color + white Hint: White and tint share the same vowel - i Shades are a color + black Hint: Black and shade share the same vowel - a

4 Violet or purple? VIOLET is a secondary color. It is made from blue and red. PURPLE is a TINT of violet. This means that you add white to violet to create a lighter version of the hue.

5 Complementary colors Complementary colors are colors DIRECTLY ACROSS from each other on the color wheel. Most common pairs: Red + green (think Christmas) Blue + orange (think Florida or Auburn) Yellow + violet (think LSU or Hiram)

7 Monochromatic colors A monochromatic color scheme consists of one color and all of its tints and shades.

8 Warm and cool colors Warm colors include red, yellow, orange, and red-violet Think fire! COOL colors include blue, green, and violet
