Color Theory Foundations of Art
2
What is… Color Theory ? In the visual arts, color theory is a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual effects of a specific color combination.
3
Who is… J ohannes I tten ? Swiss painter and teacher Johannes Itten was a pivotal member of the Bauhaus; Germany’s most influential art and design school in the early 1900’s. He was the main painter and taught a mandatory design and color class at the school. The color theories he created and taught are still used today by artist world wide! So what exactly did he contribute?
4
What were his… Contributions The 12 Point Color Wheel: Color Wheels during this time were very complicated and sometimes included HUNDREDS of colors…Itten simplified it to just 12 colors. 4 Qualities of a color: Hue Intensity Value Temperature 7 Color Contrasts: We will get into this in Drawing and Painting!
5
What is… Itten’s Color Wheel Itten created the most notable color wheel we use today: The 12 point color wheel include the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Primary Secondary T T T T T T S S S P P P

What is… Itten’s Color Wheel Learning to mix colors is important! Knowing the placement of colors on the color wheel will not only help you mix colors but it can also help you make choices on which colors to add to your painting or drawing! Your choice of color schemes can make a big difference in the success of your project.
7
What is… Itten’s Color Wheel Primary Colors The three colors that make every other color in the rainbow: Red, Blue, and Yellow By mixing two PRIMARY colors you get…
8
What is… Itten’s Color Wheel Secondary Colors The three colors made by mixing two primary colors: Orange, Green, and Violet Made by mixing one primary + one secondary color
9
What is… Itten’s Color Wheel Tertiary Colors The six colors made by mixing one primary + one secondary color: Blue-Green Blue-Violet Red-Violet Red-Orange Yellow-Orange Yellow-Green And any other color you can think of…
10
Assignment: You are going to be PAINTING your color wheel today… Using only PRIMARY colored Tempera Paint, complete the given color wheel. Watch DEMO… What is… Itten’s Color Wheel Primary Secondary T T T T T T S S S P P P

Color Harmonies: Color harmony is a term used to name the positive, aesthetically pleasing response to certain color combinations and their relationships to each other based on where they sit on the color wheel. What are… Color Harmonies?
12
Color Harmonies: 1.Monochromatic 2.Analogous 3.Complimentary 4.Split-Complimentary There are a few more harmonies that you will learn in Drawing and Painting What are… Color Harmonies?
13
Monochromatic: One color with a full range of values (tints and shades) TINTS:SHADES: color + white= pastel colors color + black= dark values What is… Monochromatic?

Atmospheric (Ariel) Perspective: refers to the effect the atmosphere has on the appearance of an object as it is viewed from a distance. What is… Atmospheric Perspective ?

Atmospheric Perspective Assignment Draw a sketch using only lines in this box: 1. Has to have 5-6 layers (including background) 2. Has to have interesting focal point that sits with in the front 2 layers. 3. Teacher Ok’s design 4. You may move onto painting the monochromatic value scale next to the picture in the color you want to use for the final. 5. Transfer to final paper and start painting the final.
