OBJECTIVES OF THE LECTURE  Define ‘eLearning’.  Explain why eLearning is important.  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of e-Learning.  Carry out eLearning in a way to maximize its benefits.

WHAT IS E - LEARNING  Electronic learning or e-learning, as it is better known, is a merger of educational process with electronic technology with the aim of bringing efficiency and effectiveness to teaching and learning.  E-learning is also called Web-based learning, online learning, distributed learning, computer-assisted instruction, or Internet-based learning.

TRADITIONAL TEACHING IS MONOTONOUS CAN LEAD TOO ???

TEACHER CENTRED MODEL TeacherStudent

Who is Well Informed Person in this Class Teacher or Students ???

E - LEARNING MODEL Student Teacher Internet Online discussion forums Virtual patients Digital Library

EVOLUTION OF TECHNOLOGY TIME TIME IMPACT Internet:Greatestimpact

VARIOUS E – LEARNING METHODS  Computers  Internet  Multimedia  Information technology in Patient care  Virtual Class rooms  Real time training  Digital Library  E – Books

COMPUTERS AND MEDICAL EDUCATION Computers are increasingly used in medical education. E-learning is moving from textbooks in electronic format to a truly interactive medium that can be delivered to meet the educational needs of students and postgraduate learners.

INTERNET CHANGES THE WORLD  The internet is computer based global information system. It is composed of many interconnected computer networks.  Each network may link thousands of computers enabling them to share information.

ALL ARE ONE WITH INTERNET The internet has brought a transformation in many aspects of life. It is one of the biggest contributors in making the world into a global village.

MULTIMEDIA LEARNING Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms.

E-LEARNING SAVES TIME OF TEACHER AND STUDENT Compared to the conventional system the most important advantages of teaching by multimedia tools are both self-determination in learning time and method and their interactivity.

TECHNOLOGY BASED PATIENT CARE Classroom of the Future featured the usual HMS classroom technology, including a Web-enabled display monitor, along with a hospital bed and patient simulator placed alongside a tutorial conference table and chairs…”

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ENRICHES HOSPITAL SERVICES

MEDICAL STUDENTS EMPOWERED WITH IPODS Medical students are starting to use iPods for classes and patients care. Teachers can use programs to put lecture materials into a flash format, allowing them to be viewed on an iPod instead of on regular slides in the lecture hall.

YOUR IPOD IS NOT JUST FOR MUSIC BUT CAN BE YOUR TEACHER Your I Pod is a great storage machine, you can carry thousands of Lectures by greatest teachers in the world.

PODCASTING IN MEDICINE According to Wikipedia, podcasting is a "method of publishing audio broadcasts via the Internet." In layman's terms, it's a way for individuals and companies to create audio programs and allow people to download, listen, and subscribe to them very easily.

PODCASTS HELPS IN CRITICAL LEARNING IN DIAGNOSIS OF HEART MURMURS Michael Barrett, a cardiologist and professor at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, created sound files of four types of computer- generated heart murmurs

VIRTUAL CLASS ROOMS Virtual classrooms that can be accessed from anywhere Well educated, professional instructors just like traditional education Diverse programs in a variety of disciplines Accredited programs to complete college degrees

E-LEARNING: BLENDED MODE Interactive Digital Content: more emphasis on demand learning interactive

REAL TIME TRAINING All the Medical Students having received basic information proceeds to flourish into self-learning and eventually understand with the ongoing process of exploration and discovery.

DIGITAL LIBRARY

www.medicalstudent.com The site introduces itself as “a digital library of authoritative medical information for all students of medicine.” It offers a starting point for medical resources on the world wide web by selecting representative websites, from scientific ones to the less academic. The website also has a Medical Journal section and a Medical Organizations section, gathering links to many main journals and organisations. Internet directories or search engines that you want to find, this website provides you with some options for this as well

ALL MEDICAL COLLEGES SHOULD BUILD, ORGANIZE OWN DIGITAL LIBRARIES

E-BOOK CAN REPLACE OLD TEXTBOOKS An e-book (short for electronic book and also known as a digital book, eBook, and eBook) is an e-text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book, sometimes restricted with a digital rights management system E-books are usually read on dedicated hardware devices known as e- Readers or e-book devices

E-LEARNING TOOLS: E-MAIL  Every teacher should have an e-mail account  Communicate with students  Communicate with parents  Students can submit assignment  Can have attachments  Create a paperless environment  Efficient and cost effective

 Reduces travel cost and time to and from institution.  Learners may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level of knowledge and interest.  Learners can study wherever they want only access to a computer and Internet is required.  Self-paced learning modules allow learners to work at their own pace. ADVANTAGES OF E - LEARNING

 Flexibility to join discussions in the bulletin board threaded discussion areas at any hour, or visit with classmates and instructors remotely in chat rooms.  Different learning styles are addressed and facilitation of learning occurs through varied activities.  Successfully completing online or computer-based courses builds self-knowledge and self-confidence and encourages students to take responsibility for their learning.

 Unmotivated learners or those with poor study habits may fall behind.  Students may feel isolated or miss social interaction.  Instructor may not always be available on demand.  Slow or unreliable Internet connections can be frustrating.  Managing learning software can involve a learning curve.  Some courses such as traditional hands-on courses can be difficult to simulate. DISADVANTAGES OF E - LEARNING

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER A GROWING CHALLENGE

NO ONE IS OLD TO NEGLECT THE TECHNOLOGY

E – LEARNING SESSION Small group learning session (1 – 2 page write up) Students will search for information on “current methods on prevention of diabetes” and compare their information with other members of the group. They will identify the information that they have not retrieved and will search for it using electronic sources.
