1 What are Cells Made up of? Cells are made of cell organelles

3 How are they different? Plant cells are green and box-like Animal cells are not green and are round

4 How are they alike? Both contain cell organelles (nucleus) Each cell organelle has its own function!

9 Cell (plasma) Membrane (A & P) Surrounds the cell Regulates what is allowed in and out of the cell (club bouncer!) This is called selectively permeable or semipermeable It is sometimes referred to as the phospholipid bilayer

10 The Cell Membrane The outer surface contains receptor molecules Allows cells to communicate with each other. Communication allows cells to maintain homeostasis.

11 Can I come in? The cell membrane controls what goes in and out. There is one main factor that determine whether or not a substance can pass through a cell membrane –SIZE- Smaller molecules pass through much easier than larger molecules

12 Cytoplasm (A & P) Jelly-like fluid inside the cell

13 Nucleus (A & P) The control center “brain” for cell functions Contains DNA (genetic material) Contains nucleolus which is involved in the production of ribosomes

15 Ribosomes (A & P) Involved in the synthesis (making) of proteins They are either free-floating or Attached to the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

16 ribosomes help create proteins! Popeye is active because he eats spinach. However, for Popeye’s cells to be active, his ribosomes help create proteins!

17 Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) (A & P) Helps in the life process of transport Rough ER has ribosomes and aids in the production of proteins Smooth ER has no ribosomes and aids in the production of fats

20 Mitochondria (A & P) Power House of the cell Process of Cellular Respiration takes place here. This converts Oxygen and nutrients into ENERGY known as ATP

22 Vacuole (A & P) Very small in animal cells and VERY large in plant cells They are storage sacs that hold water and food.

24 Lysosomes Found ONLY in animal cells Produced by the Golgi Bodies Break down old cell organelles Helps fight infection or disease

29 Remember: Plants cells contain the same organelles as animal cells do:  Cell Membrane  Cytoplasm  Nucleus/Nucleolus  Ribosomes  Rough and Smooth ER  Mitochondria  And Vacuoles

30 NOT But they also contain the following organelles NOT found in animal cells : Cell Wall (different from cell membrane) Chloroplasts (green color) Larger Vacuole

39 In Multicellular Organisms… Organelles work together to make up CELLS Cells are grouped together to form TISSUES Tissues can be combined to make ORGANS And different organs can work together as an ORGAN SYSTEMS
