1
What are Cells Made up of? Cells are made of cell organelles
3
How are they different? Plant cells are green and box-like Animal cells are not green and are round
4
How are they alike? Both contain cell organelles (nucleus) Each cell organelle has its own function!
9
Cell (plasma) Membrane (A & P) Surrounds the cell Regulates what is allowed in and out of the cell (club bouncer!) This is called selectively permeable or semipermeable It is sometimes referred to as the phospholipid bilayer
10
The Cell Membrane The outer surface contains receptor molecules Allows cells to communicate with each other. Communication allows cells to maintain homeostasis.
11
Can I come in? The cell membrane controls what goes in and out. There is one main factor that determine whether or not a substance can pass through a cell membrane –SIZE- Smaller molecules pass through much easier than larger molecules
12
Cytoplasm (A & P) Jelly-like fluid inside the cell
13
Nucleus (A & P) The control center “brain” for cell functions Contains DNA (genetic material) Contains nucleolus which is involved in the production of ribosomes
14
Nucleus Nuclear Membrane
15
Ribosomes (A & P) Involved in the synthesis (making) of proteins They are either free-floating or Attached to the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
16
ribosomes help create proteins! Popeye is active because he eats spinach. However, for Popeye’s cells to be active, his ribosomes help create proteins!
17
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) (A & P) Helps in the life process of transport Rough ER has ribosomes and aids in the production of proteins Smooth ER has no ribosomes and aids in the production of fats
20
Mitochondria (A & P) Power House of the cell Process of Cellular Respiration takes place here. This converts Oxygen and nutrients into ENERGY known as ATP
21
The Powerhouse of the Cell!
22
Vacuole (A & P) Very small in animal cells and VERY large in plant cells They are storage sacs that hold water and food.
24
Lysosomes Found ONLY in animal cells Produced by the Golgi Bodies Break down old cell organelles Helps fight infection or disease
25
Lysosome Animation
26
Centrioles Found only in animal cells Located near the nucleus Involved in cell division (reproduction )
29
Remember: Plants cells contain the same organelles as animal cells do: Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus/Nucleolus Ribosomes Rough and Smooth ER Mitochondria And Vacuoles
30
NOT But they also contain the following organelles NOT found in animal cells : Cell Wall (different from cell membrane) Chloroplasts (green color) Larger Vacuole
32
Cell Wall Found only in plant cells The cell wall is relatively rigid. Provides support and shape for the cell
33
Cell Wall
34
Chloroplast Found only in plant cells Contains chlorophyll Is necessary to carry out photosynthesis
35
Chloroplasts
36
Plant Vacuole Plant Vacuole Very large in plant cells Holds excess water in the cells
38
Name 3 structural differences between a plant & animal cell. Animal cells are round, plant cells box-like Plant cells contain a cell wall, chloroplasts, and a larger vacuole Animal cells contain lysosomes and centrioles
39
In Multicellular Organisms… Organelles work together to make up CELLS Cells are grouped together to form TISSUES Tissues can be combined to make ORGANS And different organs can work together as an ORGAN SYSTEMS

In Conclusion… Cells may have different structures (shapes) and different functions (jobs), but ALL cells must work together in a coordinated manner to carry out the processes of life.
