PLANT CELLS VERSES ANIMAL CELLS 7-2.2 Compare the major components of plant and animal cells.

1. Living Organisms All living organisms are made of cells that contain similar structures. However, there are differences between the structures of plant cells and animal cells.

2. Common Structures for Plant and Animal Cells: the cell membrane nucleus mitochondria vacuoles

3. Special Structures That Plants Have: cell wall chloroplasts

4. Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells: Difference #1: Plant cells have a cell wall, but animal cells do not. Cell walls provide support and give shape to plants.

4. Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells: Difference #2 Plant cells have chloroplasts, but animal cells do not. Chloroplasts enable plants to perform photosynthesis to make food.

4. Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells: Difference #3 Plant cells usually have one or more large vacuole(s), while animal cells have smaller vacuoles, if any at all. Large vacuoles help provide shape and allow the plant to store water and food for future use. The storage function plays a smaller role in animal cells, therefore the vacuoles are smaller.
