2 Facts About Pisa The Leaning Tower of Pisa is located in Italy. Its Affiliation is, Roman Catholic. It is located in the province Pisa and is in the Tuscany district. The tower leans at 5.5 degrees from the perpendictor. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was originally built as a marble campanile, or bell tower, for Pisa's cathedral, located in the "Campo dei Miracoli."

4 Construction Facts Of Pisa The Leaning Tower of Pisa is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground the low side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the high side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42ft) and at the top, 2.48m (8.14ft). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons (16,000 short tons). The tower has eight floors and nearly 300 steps! (296) The tower leans at 5.5 degrees from the perpendictor. In 1990, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was closed due to threats of collapse. The tower was subsiding at the rate of 0.03 inches per year. Engineers undertook a strengthening project that decreased the lean by 17 inches to about 13.5 ft. The work was completed in May 2001 and reopened for public on June 16, 2001.
