SUNDAY 2/28 – DO NOW What are some ways nations are impacted when conquered by another nations. Explain. This can be positive or negative.

THE NILE RIVER 6650 kilometers long (26 Kuwait's) Flowing from Uganda and Ethiopia into Sudan and Egypt 40 million people live near the Nile Delta (where Nile drains into the Mediterranean) Aswan High Dam – holds flood waters releasing them when needed (for what?) Silt: sediment/minerals left on land after water floods creates nutrient soil – beneficial for farming.

SUNDAY 2/28– RIVERS Nile River: Longest river in the world. 95% of Egypt’s population depend on for water. **Population density along river: 3,320 people/sq. mile **Population density in the rest of Egypt: 177 people/sq. mile Many rivers not useful because of rapids, waterfalls, and gorges. **Congo River has 32 waterfalls.

How has this changed since ancient times? 5) How has geography led to the success of countries along the Nile?

MONDAY 2/29 Assignment: Use either the map handed out with you with the Berlin Conference or a resource map in your book. 1.Read pages 417-418 in your textbook. 2.Create a list of African Resources 3.Come up with at least 2 reasons why resources have not benefited many African countries. Explain. Due: End of hour!

TUESDAY 3/1 – AFRICAN CLIMATE Located between tropics of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer. Suggests what? Sun shines directly between tropics all year round -warm, tropical temperatures. Temperature doesn’t change much over seasons, but varies between night and day. “Night is the winter of the tropics”

WEDNESDAY 3/2 – HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION – NIGERIA AND OIL 2013 – Nigeria - #10 – Oil Reserves Currently 6 th leading producer of oil 67% of Nigeria in Poverty Out of 184 countries – Nigeria is ranked 140 for poorest country

WEDNESDAY 3/2 – NIGERIA AND OIL While oil prices were high, Nigerian government spent much money. When oil prices dropped they were left with much debt. Over the past 40 years there has been over 40 oil spills Between 1998-2000 approximately 2,000 people were killed in oil explosions I will read a paragraph from Read Page 425 – in your notes explain why Nigeria has not benefited from oil.

WEDNESDAY 3/2 – CHAPTER 19 GROUP WORK 1.You will be divided into 5 groups – North, South, East, West, and Central Africa. 2.As a group, you will outline the section of chapter 19 that discusses your region of Africa. 3.I will provide an outline for the chapter and you must take notes. 4.You will create a small lesson plan and teach your section to the class. 5.You need to create a PowerPoint that displays the information you researched along with pictures that represent that information. 6.You must come up with a small activity or assignment to go along with your presentation as well. 7.If you need copies made, let me know! If approved, I will make copies for you. 8.As your classmates present, you will need to takes notes on the section.
