Aim: How do respiratory diseases disrupt homeostasis? DO NOW 1. Have you ever had a hard time catching your breath? If so, what did it feel like? If not, what do you imagine it would feel like? 2.Why are our lungs so important to us?

Bronchitis Inflammation of the bronchi Symptoms – Difficulty breathing – coughing Causes: – Infection – Irritants, such as cigarette smoke Effects: – Bronchi inflamed & increased mucus production – Not enough oxygen going to cells

Emphysema Progressive disease of the lung Symptoms: – Shortness of breath Causes: – Smoking is the leading cause – Other risk factors: deficiency of an enzyme & air pollution Effects: – Air sac (alveoli) spaces are enlarged & destroyed – Mucus in bronchioles – Fewer capillaries

Asthma Allergic reaction Symptoms: – Difficulty breathing Causes: – Combination of environmental and genetic factors – Triggers: pollutants & irritants, infections, airborne allergens Effects: – Narrowing of the bronchial tubes
