1.5 Biology and Your Future Updates: Homework: –Reading 8.2/DRTA due Wednesday –last weekly observation –Project/columns due in class Friday 1/8 Quizzes begin tomorrow: 1.4, 2.3 (DNA, proteins) MC re-takes: Wed-Thr, you must schedule time! Midterm: Pd 2-3, 7-8 Tues 1/19, 6-7 Wed 1/20 AAP: Tuesday and Thursday

1.5 Biology and Your Future Why is DNA studied and used in biological research? Activator: –“All living things have me in them. Some people call me the ‘code of life.’ My structure was described in 1953. The amount of me in a person’s body could stretch 13.5 times to the Sun. In a chimpanzee, I am 98 percent similar to that of a human. What am I? KWL: Genetics –Share what you know and how you know it Writing: –Turn your chart: 3 things (lines) you want to find out Key terms: genetics, biotechnology

1.5 Biology and Your Future Your health and the health of the environment depend on your knowledge of genetics. Genetics is the science of studying DNA, genes, and heredity. Knowledge of genetics helps you understand –Conserving populations of endangered species –Role of genetics in cancer risk –potential effects of obesity

1.5 Biology and Your Future Discussion: the role of genetics in obesity What is leptin, and what role does it play in weight gain? What role does the melanocortin 4 receptor, or MC4R, play in obesity? If someone asks you if obesity is genetic, how would you respond? Vocabulary Frayer Genetics Reading 1.4 page 23 SQ3R questions: genes/molecular genetics –Pair-share: what was the most important part of the passage? Why?

1.5 Biology and Your Future The tools of molecular genetics give rise to new biological studies. DNA is organized into chromosomes A gene is a segment of DNA in a chromosome that stores genetic information.

1.5 Biology and Your Future Biotechnology offers great promise but also raises many issues. Biotechnology is the use and application of living things and biological processes. Should researchers edit a gene to treat DMD?

1.5 Biology and Your Future Discuss: should we as a society permit the use of biotechnology to “rewrite” the genes of people with genetic disorders? Writing: –3 reasons (lines) why we should…or –3 reasons (lines) why we should not –Mix of should/should not

1.5 Biology and Your Future Discussion: Should We Screen for Cancer Genes? Choose one and write a minimum of 3 lines: –What are some of the benefits and risks associated with genetic testing? –Would you want to be tested for a genetic disease that runs in your family? Why or why not? –What do you think Elton meant when she said that knowing about the results of a test represented “a fine line between avoiding death and ruining your life”? –Would you want to be tested even if there weren’t an effective treatment you could take to prevent the disease? Do you think doctors should offer tests for genetic diseases before treatment is available? Why or why not?
