UNIDO Multilateral Environmental Agreements Branch Ida di Pietro Leupold-Loewenthal2 Bosnia Herzegovina. Phase-out of halon consumption This is an on-going project aimed at provision of technical assistance to BiH in phasing-out consumption of halons in the fire fighting sector. It was started with the survey of the sector to identify the stock of halons available in the country in the installed fire fighting equipment and in bulk storage for periodical refilling of portable fire extinguishers and cylinders of the fixed fire fighting systems. Currently, UNIDO is arranging an awareness workshop to discuss with all parties concerned the findings of the survey as well as further activities to be implemented, including legal and technical aspects of environmentally safe management of the available halon stock and its gradual phase-out by introduction of halon replacement fire fighting technologies

UNIDO Multilateral Environmental Agreements Branch Ida di Pietro Leupold-Loewenthal3 Georgia. Halon treatment The programme of Halon recovery and reuse will be implemented and operated through the Georgian Refrigeration Association(GRA). The handling of Halons at two already established R/R centers in the refrigeration sector will be more cost effective and should ensure project sustainability. The GRA will create a Halon Database in close cooperation with the local Firefighting Company "Inits Georgia". The treatment should be focused on Halon 1301, because of its high value and higher demand. The above mentioned method works on the principle of evaporating temperature of the liquid gas at ambient pressure. This method is useful for identification of Halon 1301, with short approximation, due to its low evaporating temperature at ambient pressure of -57, 8°C. The identification of Halon 1211 or 2402 is very difficult because very similar to other refrigerants evaporating temperature.
