Poison Ivy Planting Science Project By Izzy, Ella, and Abbey
2
Research Question Can we devise a device that can recycle water for at least one week when growing soybeans?
3
Hypothesis If we only watering it once or twice a week, then the experimental group will be able to survive better than the control group. We think this because it will slow the evaporation keeping the soil moist and that it will be able to get more water because the leftover water will be reused and not wasted.

Materials Needed ➔ Using a grape juice bottle, carton 7 cm, and a big jug from the art room 21 cm high to grow the other six soybeans (it has a closed top) ➔ Filters to separate the fat part of the bottle to the neck of the bottle, using paper and layered paper towels ➔ Dirt ➔ 12 soybean seeds ➔ Water ➔ Sunlight

Experimental Design Experimental Group- Using a grape juice bottle, carton 7 cm, and a big jug from the art room 21 cm high to grow the other six soybeans (it has a closed top) We plan to turn it upside down have filters to separate the fat part of the bottle to the neck of the bottle (the top skinny part) the neck or top will be the water source the middle will be the dirt to grow the plants unscrew the bottom of the container and put the water back in through the plant

Control Group Average growth 12.305cm 3 out of the 6 soybeans sprouted 1 died The 2 left got really wilted The ½ cup of water each week was not enough Soil was always dry
7
Experimental Group Average growth 16.715 cm 6 out of 6 soybeans sprouted Half way through the experiment the filter collapsed killing one of the plans and slowing the growth of another Was moist and humid in the container Always recycled water that we could give it ½ cup of water each week was more than enough

Results This data table shows the average growth and measurements of the experimental group and the control group.

Conclusions We did an experiment to test a device we built to slow water evaporation and to give the plant less water than ourcontrol.. Our hypothesis was that the experimental group would do better than the control group because the water wouldn’t evaporate and could be reused. Our hypothesis was supported by our evidence. The experimental group with the filters and the water recycling looked healtheir and was much bigger than the control. Being watered only ½ cup of water each week was not enough for the control group plants to live by, but was more than enough for the experimental group. We think it was because the experimental groups excess water got to be used again, while in the control group the water would just evaporate off. The experimental contraption had a greenhouse effect on the plants. Also the average heights of the of the experimental group were higher than the control groups. The experimental group’s was 16.715 cm and the control group’s was 12.305 cm. In the beginning the control group was doing better but its health decreased as the experiment went on. In the control group there were only three plants that sprouted and one out of the three died. In the experimental group all six soybeans sprouted, but one died when the filter collapsed. The collapsed filter also stunted one of the plants growth. Towards the end of the experiment the plants in the control group got really dry and the leaves started to wilt. While in the experimental group it was moist and warm in the container. We had to expand the habitat two times because of the plant's rapid growth. Our experiment showed that plants could survive off little amounts of water for a long time and thrive if put in a contraption like the one we made.
