GROUPS OF PLANTS
2
NON-VASCULAR PLANTS Do not have a system to transport water and nutrients Get water through diffusion Small- because they cannot move water far Seedless (use spores)
3
Types of non-vascular plants Mosses Grow in moist soil, sides of trees, rocks Leafy stalks Rhizoids are root-like structures that help mosses attach to surfaces Liverworts and Hornworts Small Live in damp places Rhizoids keep them in place
4
VASCULAR PLANTS Have a vascular system to move materials Root and Shoot systems Leaves, Stems (shoot system) and roots (root system) are 3 major organs Leaves- make food, and allow gas exchange (through stomata) Stems- provide support and transport Roots- supply water and minerals, anchor plants, and store extra food
5
Seedless vascular plants Use spores to reproduce Ferns and Whisk Ferns Have roots Have rhizomes to help them spread (underground stems) Have leaves, called fronds- which uncurl as they grow Horsetails Cane-like stems, grow in whorl pattern around stem Wet, marshy habitats Stems- hollow and contain silica Club Mosses Look similar to true mosses but have vascular tissue, roots, stems, and leaves
6
Seed Vascular Plants *seeds are plant embryos in a protective coating Gymnosperms Seeds are not in a fruit Cycads- large, woody cones Gingkos- round, grape like seeds, not in cones Conifers- cone bearing such as pine trees Angiosperms Produce flowers and fruits Flowers are reproductive system Use seeds to reproduce- but not in a fruit Use seeds to reproduce, but in a fruit

Your assignment!! In addition to reading and doing your text p. 110-116. (You can just read p. 117), you should do the following: 1.Think of 10 plants that you will see (once the snow melts…) 2.Make a t-chart and list them under non-vascular or vascular. 3.As a challenge, see if you can add (for vascular plants) whether they are seedless or seeded, and if seeded, gymnosperms or angiosperms. Example: Non-VascularVascular 1. Moss 2. White pine (seeded, gymnosperm) 3. Tulip (seeded, angiosperm)
