About the Library Three major collections: Ludcke Library, Kresge Center for Teaching Resources, and the Art Institute of Boston Library Library physical collections: 100,000 vols. and 400- 500 current print serials Library virtual collections: 55 databases and e- resource collections

Library as Caretaker Within the University, the Library is viewed as having the expertise to determine appropriate measures for safeguarding its collection.

Older material is retained and systematically preserved to serve the needs of historical research

How Will We Preserve Electronic? The dilemma we faced: “Research Level” collections are irreplaceable Preservation goes beyond “just” archiving Too large a task for one small library Too important to leave to chance; must be audited, certified, overseen

Irreplaceable? A Hypothetical Example IF American Historical Review published by the American Historical Association becomes unavailable Lesley categorizes History as a “Study or Instructional Support Level” collection THEN Lesley drops AHR and subscribes to Reviews in American History AHR is not an irreplaceable title.

A Hypothetical Example Lesley subscribes to 23 titles from the American Psychological Association Lesley categorizes Counseling Psychology as a “Research Level” collection This collection is extensive and must include access to older material for historic research APA journals are irreplaceable.

Lesley Joins Portico Currently 27% of our Research Level titles are in Portico Overall 23% of all Lesley subscriptions are in Portico Lesley pays $18.71 per title We assume Portico’s commitments will grow, Lesley’s percentage will increase, and our per title costs will actually decrease.

Lesley Joins Portico The library participates in reports for external certifying and accrediting agencies. We add information to these reports on our membership in Portico. This information shows our commitment to the collection; it also reminds non-library personnel that preservation is important.

Our Concerns If a trigger event occurs, what will happen? Many titles are published by small professional societies who may not be able to take part in community archiving endeavors. What about aggregated databases?

CLIR Recommendations for Academic Libraries and Organizations Libraries and consortia should press publishers hard to enter into e-journal archiving relationships with bona fide programs Libraries should share information with each other about what they are doing in e-journal archiving Institutions should become members of or participate in at least one e-journal archiving initiative

CLIR Recommendations for Academic Libraries and Organizations Academic libraries of all sizes should act collectively to press for digital archiving programs that meet their needs Libraries should participate in developing a registry of archived scholarly publications that indicates which programs have preserved them Libraries should lobby e-journal archiving programs to participate in a network that shares information
