Objectives SWBAT explain the difference between Health and Wellness. SWBAT describe the three parts of the Health Triangle. SWBAT describe how the mind and body are connected.

Journal Entries Journal entries will be done regularly in class. All journal topics will address a topic discussed in class. Must write the Journal Date, topic and your name at the top of the page. Address the question in paragraph form using 5-7 sentences.

Health A combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well being. You make choices everyday that affect your health.

Health Triangle The 3 Balanced Parts Know this triangle it will be on every test. The key to good health is always keeping a balanced health triangle. Each side is equal and as important as the other. Physical Mental/Emotional Social

Social Health Involves getting along with other people. This includes being a caring family member, making and keeping friends, and giving and receiving support when it is needed.

Mental/Emotional Health Involves liking and accepting yourself for who you are. This includes finding solutions to problems, expressing emotions in healthy ways, and finding positive ways to manage stress.

Physical Health Involves taking care of your body. This includes eating well-balanced meals and snacks, being physically active, avoiding disease, getting enough rest, and having regular medical and dental check- ups.

Assignment Take out a piece of paper and put your name on it. Then make three columns. One labeled Physical, one mental/emotional, and one social. In each column list as many thing as you can that fall in that part of the triangle. Ex. Physical-Eat a balanced diet, Social-make new friends, Mental/Emotional-have self-respect.

Wellness Is an overall state of well being. It is your total health. To achieve wellness you need to make good health a part of your daily routine. Every decision you make can affect your wellness.

Mind Body Connection Is how you emotions affect your physical and overall health and how your overall health affects your emotions. Your emotions directly affect your physical health and vice versa.

Assignment Your Health Triangle –Take a piece of paper. –Draw a large triangle. –Label the outside of the triangle with each component of the Health triangle. –Inside the triangle list ten adjectives that describe yourself or activities you participate in that relate to that component. –If you choose you my color it in.

Practicing Healthful Behaviors When you practice healthful behaviors you start seeing benefits quickly. Can help prevent injury, illness, disease, and other health problems.

Stress Management Stress-the body’s response to real or imagined dangers and other life events. Stress Management-identifying sources of stress and learning how to handle them in ways that promote good mental/emotional health.

Communication Skills Relationships depend on good communication. Speaking well and listening carefully are part of good communication skills. Interpersonal communication-the sharing of thoughts and feelings with other people.

Refusal Skills Refusal skills are ways to effectively say no. –SAY NO. –TELL WHY NOT. –OFFER OTHER IDEAS. –PROMPTLY LEAVE.

Conflict-Resolution Skills Conflict is disagreement between people with opposing viewpoints, interests, or needs. Conflict-Resolution skills means having the ability to end a disagreement or keep it from becoming a larger conflict.

Conflict Resolution Tips Take a time-out to let everyone calm down. Allow each person to tell his or her side of the story. Let each person ask questions of the other. Keep thinking of creative ways to resolve the conflict.

Risk/Risk Behavior Risk is the chance that something harmful may happen to your health and wellness. Risk behaviors are actions or choices that may harm you or others. Can you think of some risk behaviors? Risk behaviors have consequences which are the results of actions.

How to Reduce Risk Practicing prevention or take steps to avoid something is the best way to deal with avoidable risk. TIPS: –Plan ahead –Think about consequences –Resist negative pressures –Stay away from risk takers –Pay attention –Know your limits –Be aware of danger.

Decision Making Process The process of making a choice or solving problem. –How will this decision affect my health? –Will it affect the health of others? If so how? –Is this behavior illegal or harmful? –How will my family feel about my decision? –Does this decision fit with my values? –How will this decision affect my goals?

Values The beliefs that guide the way a person lives. –Your values include beliefs about what is right or wrong and what is important to you. –Some values are generally shared by a group of people and they are called core ethical values. –Ethical means choosing to take the right action.

Evaluating Choices Criteria-standards on which to base decisions. –H (Healthful). What are the risks? –E (Ethical). Is it right according to the core ethical values? –L (Legal). Are there rules against it? –P (Parental Approval). Would my parents approve?

Changes During Teen Years Teen years involve changes that affect all sides of your triangle. You might grow two inches, experience mood swings, and make new friends. These changes signal that you are on your way to becoming an adult. Adapting and coping with changes during the teen years can make you physically tired and emotionally stressed.

Adolescence Is the time between childhood and adulthood. It usually starts any time between the ages of 11 and 15. It could happen earlier or later. Most changes are sparked by the release of hormones. –Hormones are chemical substances, produced in glands, that help regulate many body functions.

Changes in Physical Growth Boys may notice their voice gets deeper, girls may find their figures are developing. Growth spurt –Boys growth spurt usually between ages 13 and 16 and they may grow 6 or 7 inches. –Girls growth spurt usually between ages 11 and 14 and they grow about 3 inches.

Changes in Mental and Emotional Growth Mood Swings New feelings toward others. Increased romantic interest. Increased interest in what is important to you.

Changes in Social Growth Your family –You start to act independently. You may start to disagree with family. Your friends and Peers –Your finds become more important to you, may make new friends, and your friendships may change often. Your community –You may begin to recognize your role in the larger community.

Assignment Do Health skills activity on page 11. Students are to work in groups of 2 and follow directions. Grading will be on the work done in groups.

Lifestyle Factors Are behaviors and habits that help determine a person’s level of health. Risk behaviors.

Positive Lifestyle Factors Eating nutritious foods, including a healthy breakfast. Getting at least 8 hours of sleep. Avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Preventing injuries. Spending time with friends. Developing skills and talents. Getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Common Risk Behaviors in Teens Sedentary Lifestyle-Is a way of life that involves very little physical activity. Sexual activity. Riding a bike without a helmet.

Assignment In groups of four or five please brainstorm and come up with as many risk behaviors as you can. This may require you to think. See if you can come up with at least 30. Turn in one paper per group and make sure everyone’s name is on it.

Abstinence Only sure way is to practice abstinence. Abstinence is a deliberate decision to avoid high risk behavior. Abstinence protects all three sides of health triangle.

Taking Responsibility Taking responsibility for your health involves more than just recognizing healthy choices and risk factors. Have a good attitude. –Attitude is your beliefs and feelings. Have self-control –Self-control is having restraint from your own emotions and desires.

Assignment Over the next two days the class will be divided into four groups. Each group will be given a risk behavior and they will have to perform a skit with that risk behavior. Each skit should demonstrate how a person could practice abstinence or say no to the behavior. Be creative and have fun. Each person in the group must say and do something during the skit to get credit. This will be a project grade. All skits must be performed tomorrow.

Assignment (day after presentations) Read over chapter 1 on pages 4-19. Then complete Chapter 1 Review on pages 24-25 #1-20.
