Mark these answers: What is basal metabolic rate and how is it affected when you exercise? (2 marks) Basal metabolic rate is the minimum rate of energy needed to keep the body maintained when at rest. When you exercise your basal metabolic rate is affected and you must balance the requirements your body has taken in, with the amounts that are being used up.

What advise would you give someone about eating before activity? (2 marks) You should eat lots of food before you exercise to give you lots of energy.

Explain the type of diet that a power athlete should eat and reasons for this. (3 marks) A power athletes should eat a diet high in protein content such as pasta. They should do this because it will help them to build and repair muscles damaged during performances.

Key Terms: Term Fitness: Exercise: Sedentary: Definitions Good health or good condition due to exercise and good nutrition Activity that requires physical and mental exertion Being physically inactive for long periods of time.

Mr big fat business man Is overweight and lazy. He has hired you to suggest some good exercise habits for him to incorporate into his everyday life. Explain to him what benefits there are to be gained by incorporating them.

Benefits Improving body shape Relieving stress and tension Helping you sleep better Reducing the chances of getting ill or getting diseases Toning up and improving your posture Helping to improve basic levels of strength, stamina and flexibility

Guidelines and effects How much additional activity you do depends on the individual and their job Give and example of a job that requires higher fitness levels than another

Long term and short term effects Short term; Increased heart rate Increased body temp Reddening of skin Feeling of tiredness/heaviness in some of the muscles being used Long term; Physical condition – if you are already quite healthy and active you may wish to maintain these levels. If not you may look to improve them Long term aims – this is a lifestyle choice and changes will not be immediate. Levels must be increased gradually over a period of time.
