Page 1 Environmental Mainstreaming in Development Projects Cairo, March 8 2016

Page 2 Contents Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas 1.What is environmental mainstreaming and sustainable development? 2.Developmental projects and environmental mainstreaming 3.Environmental dimension in the planning and design phase 4.Environmental dimension in the various projects packages 5.Environmental dimension in the implementation phases of the project activities

Page 3 Environmental Mainstreaming Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Environmental mainstreaming ensures that all environmental concerns are taken into account across various sectors of development during the planning and decision making processes "environmental protection requirements must be integrated into the definition and implementation of the Community policies in particular with a view to promoting sustainable development” Sustainable Development Sustainable development that meets the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs

Page 4 Looking at development through an environmental lens Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Natural Resources Climate Change Water Energy What exactly is this environmental lens???

Page 5 Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Preservation of natural resources : Project staff must agree upon the use of resources to reduce consumption and to substitute with sustainable resources whenever possible Staff must also take into consideration how such measures will be integrated into the project’s financial budget and activities The environmental dimension in the design and planning phase of the project http://eartheasy.com/live_energyeff_lighting.htm

Page 6 Environmental dimension in the planning and design phase Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Linking the concept and idea of the project to the nature of the land and its environmental problems: Example: The area of Shubra Al Khaimah has been identified with solid waste problems (environmental). Proposed development project should aim to overcome the high levels of unemployment by creating green jobs in the fields of recycling, waste disposal Example: By using the environmental lens, projects can move past simply allocating green corners in schools and start implementing drip irrigation systems to save water and producing organic fertilizer by recycling organic waste in schools.

Page 7 The environmental dimension in the various projects packages Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas 1. Employment: Jobs in the fields of waste recycling and urban agriculture (roofs, streets, walls etc.) Environmental sustainability (energy efficiency, renewable energy, reduce emissions etc.) 2. Education: Integrating the environmental dimension in the school environment Raising awareness (waste separation, using waste to produce organic fertilizer for school landscaping, paper recycling, rationalizing the consumption of all resources such as electricity, water, paper etc.) and initiating environmental preservation societies 3. Health Waste and its impact on health Safe disposal of medical waste Air pollutants

Page 8 The environmental dimension in the various projects packages Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Recreation and youth centers : Light halls and stadiums Implement drip irrigation systems Recycle Create awareness material to be placed on walls, fences, playgrounds and forming environmental preservation societies Transportation: Allocate biking and pedestrian paths Reduce air pollutants and carbon emissions The use of recycled materials ( X )

Page 9 Environmental dimension in the implementation phases of the project activities Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Reduce the carbon cycle when visiting the site area (carpooling; one car to transport team, using bicycles for team’s movement within the region) Hold meetings during the day during winter to take advantage of natural light, and during the sunset in summer Print on recycled paper Design banners that can be used for different purposes Design advertising materials that can be reused later on by the community for different uses (sacks of cloth, caps for protection from the sun, bottles of water conservation etc.)

Page 11 Participatory Development Programme in Urban Areas Focus on climate change effects on different sectors Building healthy communities adaptive to climate change impacts Supporting energy-efficient solutions Sectorial Measures Cools the area Protects the vulnerable inhabitants from heat stress Beautifies the area Architectural Measures Socio-Economic Measures The plants cool the house temperature Generates an income for the residents Beautifies the rooftop Targeting youth with awareness measures (for ex. through school programs) Awareness and Information Measures
