MATTHEW 16:13-20 The Foundation of the Church

Vs. 17 2 “Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” Hebrew “bar yonah” meaning “son of Jonah”

John 16:13-14 3 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 “We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 4

John 6:44 5 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Vs. 18 6 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against” it. The English name Peter is a transliteration of the Greek name “Petros”. (Aramaic “kepa”) This word transliterated into Greek is Kephas from which we get “Cephas” in English.

John 1:42 7 “And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). Petros commonly meant “stone” in pre- Christian Greek, but kepa means “massive rock.”

Cephas = “ROCKY” Bar Yonah 8

“It is incorrect to say that the name “Peter” describes a small stone.” Dr. Tom Constable 9

What is the Rock? 1. Peter is the rock. 2. The Confession is the rock. 3. Jesus is the rock! 10

1 Peter 2:6-8 11 “For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.“ Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,“ and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”

1 Corinthians 3:10-11 12 “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Ephesians 2:19-22 13 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

“I will build My church” 14 Acts 2:47 “…And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”

Ephesians 6:10-18 15 Please Turn in Your Bibles “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it”

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 16 “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

Vs. 19 17 "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Matthew 28:18-20 18 “Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Eph 4:11-13 19 “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Hebrews 13:17 20 “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.”

Vs. 20 21 “Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.”
