Introduction In the early 1900s, in a movement known as the Great Migration, many African Americans moved to the north to escape racist laws and poverty in the hopes of making a better life for themselves. There were more job opportunities in the north, and the promises were limitless. 1920s, Harlem was the focal point for African American culture. By this point, there were over 100,000 people living per square foot in Harlem! The streets were filled with jazz music, painters, and photographers. Artists, musicians, and writers from Harlem began to come on the scene as important figures for portraying African American culture. Harlem is still filled with excitement today. If you listen closely, you can still here Ella Fitzgerald singing the blues, and the dribble of the Harlem Globetrotters' basketballs. Even today, you can still read poetry by Langston Hughes and books by Walter Dean Myers, two of Harlem's great writers. +job opportunitiesfilled
