The Story of Beatrix House An everyday tale of life in an extra care scheme

Once upon a time………. There was a sheltered housing scheme in Dukinfield where no-one wanted to live

It’s name was Ravensfield…. It had 35 bedsits and it was a rather higgledy- piggledy building

Then one day…… Someone had a bright idea to knock the building down

….and build something new and wonderful in its place And like a phoenix from the ashes….

Beatrix House was born With 4 x 2 Bedroom Flats 27 x 1 Bedroom Flats

And everyone lived happily ever after And at last there was a high demand The End!

The Non-Fairy Tale Version We didn’t know enough about dementia The building failed to deliver The residents weren’t as grateful as we’d hoped The residents didn’t mix We didn’t engage – we stood back We didn’t understand the care providers role They didn't understand ours

Lessons Learnt Dementia is where people live Modifications to door entry systems Residents will engage as much or as little as they want to We run activities We better understand commissioning of services We’ve built relationships with carers
