Pictures, Maps, Media Use pictures and any other media you wish. Be sure pictures are of what you intend them to be…same with maps. Read titles, captions for accuracy before you insert into your presentation Tips for Efficiency Discuss a couple sections at a time. Research the basic points and discuss what you think you want to include. Find all of your media for a section or two at one time Then start to type in your information on the slides and place your media where you want them.

Mycenae: Kingdom on mainland, southwest of Athens Map Setting for Homer’s epic “The Iliad” about the Trojan War Dark Ages: (approx 1200-800 BCE) another invasion of Indo Europeans. Plunge Greece into Dark Ages (why called this?) Rise of City-States: (800-600 BCE) Olympic Games first held 775 BCE. Mark the end of the Dark Ages Map of ancient Greece that shows the many City-States of the time. Some 700 City-States(!) Heinrich Schliemann’s discoveries in the 18 th cent opened the debate whether Trojan War was real

Peloponnesian Wars & Rise of Macedonia Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 BCE) : series of wars between Athens and Sparta What were they fought over? What was the long term effect of the wars on Athens and Sparta? Macedonian Empire: Include brief info on Macedonia. Kings were authoritarian, not much special politically. Notable Figures: Phillip II of Macedon focus on war and conquests, esp. of Alexander the Great Alexander

Describe the period, its advances in the arts, culture, science (not much happened politically) 2.) the impact in places such as Alexandria (Egypt)

Pay Attention! For the slides on Rome, you will be making a few slides…the Republic will have its own slides as well as the Empire …put the information on the Punic Wars and Carthage between the Republic and the Empire I have included the Punic Wars and Carthage slide info after the Rome slides…

Rome There are two phases to address when making your slides for Rome: 1.) the Roman Republic Julius Caesar is usually considered the 2.) the Roman Empire last leader of the Republic. His grand- nephew Octavian (Augustus) becomes the first emperor of the Empire Include the same categories as with other civilizations Notable Figures: Julius Caesar Octavian (Augustus Caesar) Marcus Aurelius Constantine Diocletian Cicero

Rome in many ways simply borrowed from the Greeks: Religion Art Architecture Rome did excel and invent in the areas of: 1.) Engineering: (roads, aqueducts, polyspastos, bridges, the Baths of Diocletian, the Colosseum, the Pantheon) 2.) Law: Roman contribution to law, particularly the idea of civic duty and ethics. The notion that people in government were servants of the state and served the people The concept of citizenship was important, and duties of citizens to Rome (to serve the state)

Punic Wars and Carthage Between Rome and Phoenician city of Carthage Lasted from 264-146 BCE Describe the significance of the wars (why fought and impact) Include a slide(s) on Carthage, with basic info on importance as a sea power and trading power in Mediterranean Notable Figure: Hannibal
