7-3.3 SUMMARIZE THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THE MAJOR BODY SYSTEMS MUSCULAR SYSTEM- WORKS WITH THE SKELETAL SYSTEM TO ALLOW MOVEMENT. Muscular System Notes
2
Functions of the Muscular System The Primary Function of the Muscular System is Movement. Every movement in your body---from the beating of your heart, to the movement of food down your throat---occurs because of your muscles.
3
Muscle Movement Voluntary- you can consciously control them (like the muscles in your arms). Involuntary- you cannot consciously control them (like the muscles in your intestines).
4
Skeletal Muscles Attached to your skeleton with Tendons Functions: Perform Voluntary Movement Walking and Flexing Description: Long, striated (striped) fibers Fibers work in pairs by contracting Get tired easily
5
Smooth Muscle Found inside organs. Functions automatically control many types of movement (Ex. Pushing food down digestive system) Description: Involuntary Shorter than Skeletal Muscles Found in walls of stomach, blood vessels, and intestines Contract Slowly Do not get tired easily
6
Cardiac Muscles Found in the heart. Functions: Pump blood through blood vessels by making heart beat. Description: Involuntary Striated Branched Shape Contract Slowly Do not get tired
7
Comparison of Muscle Types
8
Tendons Tendons are strong tissues that attach muscle to bones. How They Work: As muscle fibers contract, they shorten and pull the tendon. In turn, the tendon pulls the bone and makes it move.
