Emerging technologies (ETs) are considered to be of critical importance in the teaching and learning environment. It is considered that technologies such as screen capture software, specifically, Camtasia Studio 8 can have beneficial applications for learners in the instructional environment.
3
The Camtasia Studio 8 software is utilized to record on-screen activity with the ability to edit and narrate videos. Software features include: Recording on-screen activity Customizing and editing content Adding interactive elements (such as quizzes) The ability to share videos online (TechSmith, 2013).
4
To pause a recording to adjust your screen, click the pause button. You can resume recording by clicking on the record button again. When you want to stop recording, click the blue stop button. A dialog will appear for you to name and save the file. To start recording, click the red button. A rectangle will appear for you to select the area you want to record.
5
Ability to capture PowerPoint slides Create software demos Import camera video and music Customize recordings (For example: pan and zoom features)
6
Optionally record directly to Flash SWF for small streamable movie files. Auto-pan allows fixed region to follow the mouse. Auto-name files by date/time. Ability to share on Screencast.com. Screencast videos are more cost-effective to implement than live video (Gentle, 2012).
7
Learning curve may pose issues for first time users. No Visual Effects Inability to fade video clips while adding transitions as with Windows Movie Maker
8
Utilized with junior high school Religious Education teachers to assist in creating a webpage for their subject area. Captured screen as html framework was explained and typed prior to workshop. Training videos included built-in quizzes to test understanding of key concepts.
9
A: Analyze Learners - Background skills and interests of learners were examined. S: State Objectives - Behavioral objectives stated. S: Select Methods, Media, and Materials - Careful consideration given to media able to reinforce keys concepts for novel learners. U: Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods – Camtasia Studio selected as ideal platform to reinforce learning. R: Require Learner Participation – Learners utilized videos to aid in task completion. E: Evaluate & Revise – Assessment of efficacy in Camtasia’s utilization to support attainment of objectives (Smaldino, Lowther, & Russell, 2012 ).
10
Teachers were taught how to use Camtasia Studio to give instructions that would be repeated. Through the screencasting feature content can be shared online so that when students need to refer to instructions later, the content would be readily available for them to review. This allowed teachers to enhance their lessons with extra resources and allowed students who missed a class to not fall behind by having access to the content covered.
11
Emerging technologies can have many beneficial applications in the instructional environment. Camtasia Studio 8 screen-capture software was utilized in augmenting professional development workshops both in The Bahamas and the United States. It was considered that the recording of on- screen activity allowed educators to revisit key concepts away from the training sessions to reinforce comprehension.
