How to Write Good Essays
2
An introduction should go from general to specific. It should start with a hook and end with a thesis. A HOOK grabs the reader’s attention: Ask an intriguing question Use a startling statistic Describe something in detail Use a personal story
3
At the end of the Introduction, you should have a thesis statement It outlines the main points of the paper It should be parallel It should be one sentence long Example: Nursing is a great profession because of the flexible hours, the generous pay, and the chance to help others.
4
Each one should start with a topic sentence. Each topic sentence should have a key word which correlates with the thesis statement. Example: One of the biggest benefits of being a nurse is the flexible work schedule. In most topic sentences, you should have transitions. Transitions connect the last idea to the next one. Example: Another reason many people choose nursing as a career is because of the pay.
5
A Conclusion should move from specific to general. Restate the main ideas from your thesis statement but in a new way. End leaving your reader thinking.
6
Avoid “you” Paragraphs should be 8-10 sentences. Always be as specific as possible. Be sure to elaborate and explain in detail within paragraphs. Paragraphs should only focus on ONE MAIN IDEA. Don’t jump around.
