3 What is Email? Email is an electronic way to send or retrieve personal and/or business ‐ related messages, including text and pictures. No postage stamps are required! Think of email like the postal service. To receive email, you must have an account on a mail server. This is similar to your mailing address where you receive letters. Your email message is sent from your computer to a server (it’s like the post office) where the computer looks at the address (like the address on a letter) and then directs the message on to the server associated with the recipient’s email account. Once your email arrives at its destination mail server, the message is stored in an electronic mailbox (like your regular mail box) until the recipient retrieves it. Email Basics

4 Step 1 Go to an email site, such as Yahoo or Gmail Select “Mail” or “Create an Account” button Email Basics

5 Step 2 You will need to fill out the online form with your personal information Choosing a strong password is important. Make sure your password has a capital letter, some numbers or is a mix with words not related to your username/Id Email Basics

6 What’s the difference? ilovebooks237 ilovebooks237@yahoo.com This is called a username or Id You type this when you log into your email site, like yahoo.com or gmail.com This is called an email address You use this when you need someone to contact you, like when you are typing in an online form or application Email Basics

7 I’m not a Robot! What is this?! This is called a “Capcha” It is used to stop automated services from taking advantage of the site. These can be tricky, but you can refresh the image or even listen to its pronunciation. Refresh here Email Basics

8 Step 3 Add another form of contact. You will need to have a cell phone or alternate email to create your new account. Sadly, without these you can not get your new email account. Email Basics

9 The Basics “Inbox” shows new mail “Sent“ shows outgoing mail “Spam“ shows advertisements “Trash“ shows deleted emails “Contacts” are the email addresses of friends, family, etc. Search box to find lost emails Click on the Subject of an email to open it in full view Email Basics

10 Composing New Messages A basic email includes 3 parts: superwoman63@gmail.com New project Hi Sarah, I was hoping that you might have time this weekend so we can work on our new project. I’m so excited to start, not that we have all our supplies in the mail! Let me know what days and times work best for you. I hope to see you this weekend! TTYL, -Amy p.s. Ill bring a cake. 1. 11 Also good to know… Use “CC” and “BCC” to send multiple copies. “BCC” is so that recipients won’t see each other’s email addresses Create folders here to keep your email organized “Emoticons” are small cartoon faces that help show emotion in an email, but they are not used when writing a formal email Email Basics

12 Attaching The paperclip is the symbol for attaching content to your email, such as pdfs or images After clicking on the paperclip, an explorer box will open to help you locate the content you want to be attached 1. Choose the content’s location 2. Select the item 3. Click “Open” Email Basics

13 The Dos and Don’ts of Email Do give your email to your friends, family, and coworkers Do check your account’s security settings Do know the difference between CC and BCC Do use abbreviations and slang (lol, ttyl, rofl) in emails to close friends and family Do use email to sign up for subscriptions to companies that you trust-in order to get coupons and news Do have two email accounts with different companies or for different purposes Don’t send your bank account info, social security number or other extremely confidential information in your email Don’t reply back to an advertisement- most don’t check them (instead use their customer service email) Don’t use an emoticon or email slang in an email to your boss Don’t include too many images in an email-attach them instead Don’t send content that is (NSFW) “Not safe for work” without a warning in the subject line Email Basics

14 Email Challenge -Create a new email message talking about what you did today before class -Include an emoticon -Italicize the font -Send the message to your instructor’s email address Email Basics
