Country life vs. City life Scope of Unit 2: Theme or subject: the kinds of life we find in the country and in the city. Introduction to the main ideas of the lesson. Reading Skills: Reading two passages for main ideas, and scanning for details. A letter about the farming life. An article about a farm family. Vocabulary: Introducing new vocabulary related to country life and city life. Writing Skills: Paragraph writing (topic sentence – supporting sentences – concluding sentences). Grammar: Simple Past Tense

I.FOCUS ON THE TOPIC A- Prediction What are these people doing? Are they doing different works? Where can they do these works?

Picture 1 What is the man doing? He is milking a cow. You can see him sitting on a stool with a bucket in front of him to put the milk in it. Where is this kind of work done? It is done on a farm. How do you think he feels when he does this work? He feels happy.

Picture 2 What are these children doing? They are collecting eggs. You can see them putting the eggs in a basket. Where is this kind of work done? It is done on a farm. How do you think they feel when they do this work? They feel happy.

Picture 3 What is this woman doing? She is driving a tractor. can see her driving it in the field. Where is this kind of work done? It is done on a farm. How do you think she feels when she does this work? She feels happy.

Conclusion Can people do the same kind of work in the country side and in the city? No. There are certain kinds of work that people can only do in the country side or on a farm and other kinds that they can only do in the city. But they should feel happy with the kind of work they choose to do.

B- Sharing Information Where do people grow up? On page 20 you have 3 places where people grow up: in a city, in a small town, or in the country side. Try to find out where did you grow up? And where did other members of your family grow up?

C- Preparing to read On page 20 you have two statements about the Americans who worked on farms and agritourism (vacationing on small family farms). Read the statements then answer the questions that follow.

Vocabulary for comprehension Fields: pieces of land for farming. – I like to watch the farmers at work in the fields. Crops: plants that a farmer grows. – We have winter crops that are different from summer crops. Raise: take care of. – Ahmed raises cows on his farm. Do exercise on p.21

Responsibility: Something that it is your job or duty to deal with. The manager has a lot of responsibilities. [+ to do sth] It is your responsibility to make sure that your homework is done on time. Wood: AREA (also woods) - A large area of trees growing near each other. We went for a walk in the woods. Use: PURPOSE If you use something, you do something with it for a particular purpose. Can I use your pen? She uses her car for work. Nick used the money to buy a CD player.

Used to: used to do/be something- If something used to happen or a situation used to exist, it happened regularly or existed in the past,but it does not happen or exist now. I used to go out every night when I was a student. Monica used to live in Glasgow. He used to be a lot fatter. Sunrise: When the sun appears in the morning and the sky becomes bright. Dependent on: Needing the help of someone or something in order to exist or continue as before. She's completely dependent on her parents for money.

Quit : NOT WORK - to leave your job or school permanently. She recently quit her job to spend more time with her family. Courage: The ability to deal with dangerous or difficult situations without being frightened The soldiers fought with great courage. She didn't have the courage to tell him the truth. Grow up: BECOME ADULT to become older or an adult She grew up in New York.

Income: money that you earn by working, investing, or producing goods families on low incomes Proud of: PLEASED- feeling very pleased about something you have done, something you own, or someone you know. She was so proud of her son. [+ to do sth] I'm very proud to be in this project. Birth: give birth- When a woman or an animal gives birth, she produces a baby from her body. She gave birth to twins.
