Psychology 290 Lab #6 – Research Design Nov. 7-9 Descriptive Correlation Experimental Quasi-experimental
2
Correlational Design Uses measures of association to determine the relationship between variables Non-intervention approach Often characteristic of self-report methods Correlation range from -1.0 to 1.0 Correlation does not imply causation –Third/Spurious variables
3
Experimental Design Variables are experimentally controlled; Experimental manipulation of an independent variable Between-subjects Within-subjects Issues Practical Subject variables Power Standardization Time-related effects Demand characteristics Internal & external validity Counterbalance Random assignment
4
Quasi-experimental Same structure as experimental designs; however, lacks either equivalent groups or standardized treatment Non-equivalent groups –Subject variables as independent variables –When random assignment cannot be used Time-series design –Dependent variable is measured a number of times before and once after the experimental manipulation –History threat/confounds
