By the end of the 1800s, the United States sought to spread its’ influence to other parts of the world This would create a “global economy” and allow the United States to emerge as a world power

Hawaii In 1893, American business (mainly the Dole Corporation) supported an overthrow of Hawaii’s Monarchy The Republic of Hawaii was created, but in 1897, U.S. President William McKinley agreed to annex Hawaii and make it a U.S. Territory Annex- to join or attach, as in the joining of territory to an existing country

The Panama Canal The United Sates sought a faster way to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific The narrowest area between the 2 oceans was in an area of Colombia called Panama President Theodore Roosevelt encouraged the Panamanians to revolt against Colombia In 1904, the Panamanians negotiated a deal for the United Sates to construct the Panama Canal

Dollar Diplomacy With Latin America under U.S. influence, President William Taft encouraged American businessmen to invest Dollar Diplomacy- promise by Taft that American interests in Latin America will be upheld by force
