Procedures Class will read pages 808-809 in TAJ. Students will examine the political cartoon on page 809 and discuss answer the question underneath the cartoon as a class. Teachers will project the political cartoon on page 51 from “Interpreting Political Cartoons” on the Promethean. Students will examine and answer questions 1-4 on page 52 in groups of 3-4. Class will discuss. In groups, students will define the following words: stereotype and irony. Class will discuss. stereotype: a conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image. irony: the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning

Procedures In groups, students will create a Venn Diagram on a piece of butcher or chart paper comparing both cartoons and how they portray Joseph McCarthy and the McCarthy Era. Groups will share their comparisons with the class. Students will answer the following question in their interactive notebook: What negative effects did McCarthy’s anti- Communist actions have on American society?
