“Putting together with light” Where does this occur? Mesophyll – Palisade Cells Why? Where majority of chloroplasts are located
2
1.Capturing the Sun’s Energy- energy from sun is absorbed by chlorophyll and used to split molecules of Water (H 2 O) into molecules of Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O 2 ). 2.Producing Sugar- Energy from sun is also used to combine Hydrogen (H) with Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) to produce glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 )

“Putting together with light” Reactants? CO 2 + H 2 O + Energy C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 carbon water glucose oxygen dioxide Products? Light 6 6 6

-Process by which organisms break down food to release energy -Oxygen must be present Where does this occur? mitochondria Chemical equation: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + Energy glucose ALL CELLS PERFORM CELLULAR RESPIRATION! ATP ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate ) – an energy-giving molecule used by all living cells.
5
Why is cellular respiration needed by all living organisms? * To perform all life functions * Grow, Repair damaged cells, Replace worn out cells Key Points: Photosynthesis uses sunlight to create stored energy in the form of glucose/food. Cellular respiration uses food/glucose to release energy.
