Why Don’t We Always Perceive Reality Correctly? Perception and Reality Things Are Not Always As They Seem...
2
Why Don’t We Always Perceive Reality Correctly? Overview There are three general possibilities: (1) The WORLD’s “fault”… Does the information the world sends us mislead us? (2) Our SENSE ORGANS’ “fault”… Do our senses change correct information from the world to incorrect information for our brains? (3) The BRAIN’s “fault”… Does our mind misinterpret the correct information from our sensory organs?
3
Fault? Maybe nothing is really wrong at all… There is a fourth possibility: (4) Nothing is really wrong Perhaps, differences between our perceptions and reality does not mean there is anything truly going wrong. The differences could be a natural result of the brain or the sense organs solving other more important problems and these are just the minor side effects.

All of These Happen

The World’s Fault (1) A couple of the things we have studied can legitimately be considered the world deceiving us… The Doppler effect is one case.

Conclusions Key points to be illustrated from previous demos: (1) Sensory system only equipped to view certain types of information in the world (2) The sensory system processes information in ways that do not necessarily give an accurate picture of the world (3) Brain cells (neurons) process information they get from the senses (4) Neurons take time to process this information (5) Previous experience (our expectations about what will happen) influences current and future perceptions
