5
Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers First, add and subtract fractions May need to find the LCD. Then, add or subtract whole numbers.
6
Examples
7
Mixed Numbers Find 2 1/3 - 1 2/3 Issues???
8
Barrowing Sometimes when subtracting mixed numbers, the second fraction is larger than the first. What do we do in 23-19 In this case we need to rename and barrow from the whole number.
9
Barrow and Rename 7 ½ 8 ¼ 6 4/5
10
Examples
11
1. Check to see if there are common denominators Yes, go to step #6 OR #7 No, go to step #2 2. Find LCD of the two fractions. 3. Make equivalent fractions with common denominators. ○ Go to step 7 if adding/subtracting fractions.
12
4. If subtracting mixed numbers, check to see if second fraction is larger than first. If no, go to step #6 If yes, go to step #5 5. Barrow from whole number or make both mixed numbers into improper fractions. If barrowing, barrow from the whole number and add a whole to the fraction (in the form of an improper fraction, 4/4)
13
6. Add or subtract whole numbers 7. Add or subtract fractions Numerator plus/minus numerator Denominator stays the same 8. REDUCE! Simplify fractions (divide numerator and denominator by the same number) Make improper fractions into proper fractions ○ If improper is with a whole number, remember to add the 2 whole numbers.
