3. Atomic Structure “Cheat Sheet”
Atoms contain 3 SUBATOMIC PARTICLES (Protons, Neutrons and Electrons). These particles have a charge (PROTONS +, NEUTRONS Ø, AND ELECTRONS -)
The NUCLEUS of an atom contains the PROTONS & NEUTRONS
The ATOMIC MASS represents the # OF PROTONS & NEUTRONS COMBINED

4. Atomic Structure Cheat sheat
The ATOMIC NUMBER represents the NUMBER OF PROTONS that an atom of that element contains.
Spinning in wild orbit AROUND THE NUCLEUS are the ELECTRONS.
In a neutral atom, the # OF PROTONS and the # OF ELECTRONS are equal so their charges cancel each other out

ELECTRONS stay at DIFFERENT DISTANCES (ENERGY LEVELS) from the nucleus because they possess different amounts of energy.
These ENERGY LEVELS have room for ONLY A CERTAIN NUMBER OF ELECTRONS.
-LEVEL 1 HOLDS UP TO 2
-LEVEL 2 HOLDS UP TO 8
*LEVEL 3 HOLDS UP TO 8 FOR THE FIRST ELEMENTS, THEN IT HOLDS UP TO 18

When a level becomes FULL, electrons must BEGIN TO FILL THE NEXT HIGHER (further out) energy level.
The LAST ENERGY LEVEL of an atom is called the VALENCE SHELL.
**No matter how many levels an element has, THE VALENCE SHELL CAN ONLY HOLD UP TO 8 ELECTRONS**
