3 Overview l Hundreds of thousands of people have moved south from the northern parts of Thatta to seek refugee in the high lands of the area. l The situation in the Thatta district (focus on Makli area) can be described as desperate. l The roads going from Hyderabad towards Makli filled with sporadic settlements and displaced walking along side the highway. l Towards the city of Makli the intensity of people (including traffic) has drastically increased and the entire city and its surroundings is highly populated.

5 Overview l Large amount of livestock living amongst the people. l Road towards Badin is cut off (since 3 days) l Security situation deteriorating l No international actors present and only local NGO´s present working on an ad hoc basis, with evacuation support, food, shelter and water distribution. Urgent needs: Shelter, Camp management, Food, Wash, Health.

7 Input from DCO l The DCO of the district Mr. Manzoor Shaikh describes the situation in the Makli area as desperate, not able to present a total numbers of displaced in the district. l No registration of the IDP´s has been conducted. l The official figure to date is 164.000 evacuated, however the actual number of displaced is estimated to be much higher (est. 500.000). l The DCO was recently assaulted and the situation near the facility is chaotic and aggressive. l The DCO confirms that security situation is deteriorating with continuously reports of looting and thefts in the area.

8 Input from DCO l The district authority has access to approximately 1500 tents, however, the amount will not be sufficient to meet the influx. l The DCO plans to move the people to the under construction Central Jail building on Ghulamullah Road, process started, approximately 4000 people shifted. l The DCO hinted that the people have to be shifted to organized camps in the town of Jungshahi. Objective is to place them away from the main roads. l The DCO asks for immediate support from the international community based on the urgent need for shelter (organized camp sites, NFI´s), camp management, wash, health and food. l In addition, there is a need for volunteers to augment the current capacity. l Furthermore, the need for management support of livestock is requested since displaced live with their livestock and are reluctant to move into camps.

9 Shelter l Only a few organized camps managed by NGO´s (NRSP identified) l No registration conducted by DCO l Sporadic settlements in Makli and outskirts l Large amount of livestock Need: Tents, Plastic Sheets and NFI´s (cooking utensils, jerry cans, buckets etc.)

13 Food l Major food shortage l Cooked food only in a few organized camps l Random food distribution on the streets Need: Food rations, Food for children, Food (Dry) Food distribution Makli area

14 Health l Chinese and Turkish hospital operational now with Hands ambulances l Low to non-existing presence of medical facilities l Urgent care for pregnant women required l Large population of children in the area l Snakes in the area Need: Mobile clinics, Anti-Venom, Malaria, Medicines, ORS IDP´s and livestock living together

15 Wash l Water taken directly from canal l No latrines available – open defecation l Water tanker distributing canal water l Muslim hand is installing one water purification plant Need: Water purification equipment & tablets, hygiene kits, buckets, jerry cans and latrines

16 Urgent requests for support From DCO and local NGO`s: All relevant support from: l Shelter l Camp Management (including livestock mgt) l FOOD l WASH l Health l Nutrition l Immediate dispatch of relief items i.e. Food, Shelter/NFIs, WASH, Health l Volunteers Local NGO´s ready to initiated relief work provided supplies from government and international community

17 The way forward l Inter-cluster Coordination Office in Hyderabad to be up and running within approx. 24 hours l Contact list and 3W for region is completed l Inter-cluster (with local authority & military) and cluster meetings in Hyderabad (Shelter/NFI´s, Food, WASH, Health) to be arranged ASAP l Immediate dispatch of 10,000 plastic sheets and bamboos for improvised shelter
