13 Venice- Government Venice was called a republic but the people had little political freedom. The supreme ruler was called the DOGE. He had a Secret Council of Ten…a secret police force for imprisoning, torturing and more. Venice, like Florence had many wealthy families and created a successful Navy. Venice then was able to gain control of the trade routes on the Mediterranean because it had 100’s of Venetian merchant ships and warships. No other city-state attempted to invade because of it’s watery surroundings and it’s strong navy power. The only person to conquer Venice was: NAPOLEON in the 1800’s.

14 VENICE- City of Arts  Venice was also known for famous painters and for beautiful buildings and palaces.  The most famous Venetian Artist was: TITIAN. He often painted women with light red hair = titian red  Venice also had it’s Renaissance Festivals where the rich families would go to parties wearing masks.
