For the attention of parents/carers/guardians: Please can you sign and date below to say that you have seen this homework booklet and that you will be helping the history department to monitor your child/ward’s completion of the tasks when they are set. Signature: …………………………………………………………………Date:……………… 2 What we expect from students: To hand homework in on time. Students must hand their completed homework in with an attached mark scheme. It is the responsibility of the student to print off this mark scheme. All work must be completed by looking at the criteria found on the mark scheme To put a good amount of effort in to homework tasks. We will suggest how long each activity should take. To ask for help or guidance (if needed) in plenty of time prior to the due date. To ensure that homework is well presented. That students have done all they can to prepare themselves for their formal assessment What you can expect: A homework tasks is set during every school half term. Each homework has been carefully designed to develop the key skills required to be an excellent historian Each homework task has a variety of parts. These have been designed to build up relevant contextual knowledge which will help with termly formal assessments. To have some of your homework peer-assessed by others in your class. That homework will be marked using the criteria sheet found on the following pages. For each homework the feedback sheet will be highlighted, and put in their best work folders History points to be awarded to reflect the effort put in to the homework. History points will also be signed off on your reward chart. This will map your progress throughout the year. There will be a total of 44 History points available throughout the year Formative comments and official levels will issued on your termly assessments.. The teacher will issue comments that will link into your progress and targets. You may well be expected to show that you have added to your work once it has been marked and feedback given. This will help you have taken on-board advice and developed your historical skills.

Aims and objectives: To show an understanding of the methods of defence used during World War I Big picture: You must produce a model Trench with detailed annotations explaining the defensive features of the Trench. You may work in pairs Get an empty shoe box or similar sixed box. Research WWI trenches. Look at cross sections and birdseye views of WWI trenches recreations Recreate the Trench out of your own materials. Ask teachers to see examples. Label the defensive features and explain how they prevented enemy attackers from gaining territory. Try and include some of the activities that would have gone on inside the trenches or in the reserve trenches Design your own war memorial for the upcoming centenary of the Great War 1914 -1918, this must be in the local area. Ideas for the Memorial: Research individual war heroes from the local area www.roll-of- honour.com/sussex/arundel.html www.roll-of-honour.com/sussex/chichester.html Try and incorporate their names or actions into your war memorial. You have failed to grasp the topic studied 1 Homework task I: The WWI Trench and War Memorial Student tick list Teacher tick list Task I: You have printed out the homework booklet for the rest of the year, and have had it signed by your parents. You have written down at least 10 different defensive features of a trench and written out how these kept the enemy out/kept them safe. These need to be ranked in order of necessity. You have produced a blue print for your model trench based on a variety of pictures. You must match the defensive features up with the numbers on your previous list. Task II: You have made a model of your trench in a shoe box. You must include the information from the previous weeks work on the outside of the shoebox or the inside of the lid. You have included detailed labels showing what rooms/ areas there were inside the trenches and what went on in these rooms and why Task III: You have come up with a quality drawn design for an original war memorial. You should explain your design. You have clearly conducted excellent local research on some soldiers who fought/died from your village/town/county You have researched your local war memorial and included some additional information Extension: Research how German trenches were designed, and compare the similarities and differences 5 WWW? Aims and objectives: Task: Interview someone you know about the decade they grew up in. If possible, interview someone who was alive during the rock and roll era of the 1960s or the doom and gloom of the 1970s. Aims and objectives: To know about different groups in society were treated in the past Project task: In pairs you must create a PowerPoint presentation which takes the form of a museum (see your class teacher if you require a template for this). This PowerPoint will be shown to the rest of the class. Your museum must have four different themes which include justifications of why you have selected them. You must each research this group and produce a poster outlining who they were, what they did and evaluate how successful they were Part II Write an application form for this group stating the necessary qualifications, characteristics, personality traits required Write an application letter for this role. Part III Create a 5 minute movie which looks like it could have been produced by the ministry of defence which outlines everything you know about the group.
