Mad Dog Math A Self-Paced summer program for students that place into developmental math using ALEKS The short term goals: ◦ Reduced time to For-Credit math courses ◦ Higher pass rates in each developmental math course. ◦ Higher pass rates in their next developmental math course. ◦ Higher pass rates in their first college level math course. Note: Students are tracked to completion of first college level math.

ALEKS Pie

ALEKS Student Tracking

MDM Program- Cost? Cost to Student: ◦ Nothing UTEP provides: ◦ 6 Hour math review ◦ ALEKS code ◦ Parking permit ◦ First ACCUPLACER

MDM Program- Who? Students that have ◦ Taken the ACCUPLACER and placed into developmental math ◦ Taken a 6 hour Review ◦ Re-taken the ACCUPLACER and still placed into developmental math

MDM Program- Recruitment? How are students Recruited? ◦ Testing identifies students that qualify for MDM. ◦ The Developmental Math faculty are waiting outside the testing/advising office recruiting students for the program.

MDM Program- Logistics? Operates ◦ Mid-June to Mid-August ◦ Using 3-4 faculty Utilizes two labs in the Library Lab is open ◦ 5 hours, 4 days a week Students are required ◦ To attend the lab a minimum of 5 hrs/wk ◦ Work an additional 10 hours online per week

MDM Program – Logistics? Attendance and hours online are tracked weekly ◦ Students are dropped if fail to meet the requirements Upon completion of the pie, students are given a waiver into their next math course

What students say.... “I’ve tried everything from tutoring to self help books and I always seem to get grades no higher than a 75%. When I completed ALEKS my final assessment was a 96%, the highest I have ever gotten. Plus I was even able to retain the information I was taught.”

“This is going to sound strange, but I've almost become obsessed with ALEKS. It's like instant gratification. I turn to it when I get frustrated or tired of doing something else. I've NEVER done well in math, and I'm actually pretty proud of my interest/accomplishment/ understanding of math now. I LOVE ALEKS!!” What students say …..

The bottom line … 98 students took MDM summer 08 73 students placed into college level math who otherwise would have had at least one semester of developmental math ahead of them $227 per student

MDM Summer ‘09 Operating from June 22 to August 7 Last recruitment, July 16 Number of Students:244 As of July 17, 2009 ◦ 13 students have completed ◦ 100 students are within 20% -25% of completing

Lessons Learned Capturing student data is critical to the success of the program and long term tracking. Familiarize yourself with your school’s advising guidelines. Enlist the help of your school’s testing and advising offices. Set clear policies about attendance and hours online, then follow through!

Lessons Learned Provide training to instructors about teaching in a “lab environment” Run Weekly reports from ALEKS on students status. Create a contract and have students sign it agreeing to the terms. Every time you see the student have a 5-10 minute conversation about their progress.
