WELCOME

What? So What? Now What? What is Service-Learning?  How SL is different from Volunteering/Internships So What? – The Purpose of Education  Socially Responsible Global Citizenship – see Dominican Mission Now What? - Connecting Theory/Practice thru Reflection/Collaboration  Challenging assumptions & stereotypes  Identifying root causes and systemic solutions

Dominican Mission “Dominican University of California educates and prepares students to be ethical leaders and socially responsible global citizens who incorporate the Dominican values of study, reflection, community, and service into their lives. The University is committed to diversity, sustainability, and the integration of the liberal arts, the sciences, and professional programs.”

How is Service-Learning Different? Volunteerism/Community Service: ~ not intentionally connected to academics ~ not necessarily sustained over time Internships/Clinicals/Practicums: ~ introduces & immerses student in field of interest ~ in addition to academic course (40 hrs/unit) ~ provides job experience (profit & non-profit) Service-Learning: VideoVideo ~ intentional connection between academics and experiences ~ integrated into academic course (~2 hrs/wk) ~ nurtures skills/knowledge/awareness applicable to many fields ~ enhances learning & meets community interests ~ civic learning through reflection

Six Word Memoir Six Word Memoir Six word story about a memorable learning experience... (exciting, interesting, challenging, or memorably terrible!)

“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” --LILLA WATSON, AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL ACTIVIST AND EDUCATOR

Rather, celebrate difference.” Think about a significant moment, an overall feeling, something that stood out, a connection made with your academics, etc. STRONG: “…I decided to spend most of my time speaking with and accompanying this patient. There is the care that is given by performing procedures from healthcare providers (nurses, nursing assistants, therapists, physicians) and there is also the care that comes by another person's mere presence. These two factors combined together result in great ethical care.“ – nursing student WEAK: "I had a great conversation with Cathy about Thanksgiving.”
