1. Site, Settlement and Situation Unit revision

2. Lesson aims:  To revise the topic of site, settlement and situation before your test on Monday.  To identify the type of question that may come up in the test or in your future exams.

3. How will we do this?  We are going to take part in a range of different tasks that cover most of the topic in the unit.  We will look at past paper style questions and share our knowledge on how to answer them.

4. Lesson starter:  Under the heading “Hot seat” write down 5 questions on the Settlement unit that you think would be difficult to answer.

5. Group roles:  In your group you are going to be asked to perform a number of tasks.  To make this easier you are going to be given a number and then your roles as we go on.  Give each member of your group a number.

6. Task 1: Visual learning land use zones.  You are going to see a number of pictures.  Each one represents a land use zone in the city.  Your current scribe must write down the zone and the main characteristics in 2 minutes. For this tasks the number 1’s are the scribe and the number 2’s will feed back to the group.

11. Task 2: Mapwork  For this task you will need:  The map of Middlesbrough (2000 Credit paper)  A mini white board and pen (2 per group)

12. Grid refs quick check  On your white boards draw the symbols at:  498, 161  462, 209  574, 243  501, 203

13. Exam style question  “The CBD of Middlesbrough is in grid square 49,20”.  Do you agree with this statement?  Give map evidence for your answer. (5ES) What are the most important things about this question?

Exam style question  You must say why you think it is the CBD and then, using grid references, you must give evidence to support it.  Example answer:  I do agree that this is the CBD because there is a town hall at 496, 202. It is very typical that the town hall would be in the town centre and in the oldest part of the city, the CBD. (1ES)

16. Task:  Working on your own (do not speak to the people next to you yet). Answer the questions:  “The CBD of Middlesbrough is in grid square 49,20”.  Do you agree with this statement?  Give map evidence for your answer. (5ES)  (6 minutes) Now swap jotters with the person beside you. Share your answers and add to them where you can.

17. Model answer could include:  This is the CBD because:  It has a grid iron street patter 495, 203. This is typical to the old style of building in the CBD. (1)  It has many transport links such as a bus station 492, 204 (1), a train station 497, 207 (1) and a main road 495, 206 (1). This is typical of a CBD because many people need to get there to work and also many tourist visit the CBD.  There is a tourist information point at 495, 203 (1).  There is also a church with a tower 491, 206, this is typical of a CBD to have places of worship (1).

18. Map work last question.  On your white board write a 6 figure grid reference for an area of:  Old 19 th Century housing (old housing zone)  Newer 20 th Century housing (new housing zone)

19.  Fold your maps and the number 3’s bring them in along with the whiteboards and pens.

Exam style question 2  You have each been given an exam question.  Look at areas A and B.  Describe the differences in housing density and street patterns between the two areas.  It says 3 ES but we will make it 5ES Working in your 4’s again the number 4’s will be the scribe and the 3’s will report back to the class (4 mins)

21. Task: Scenario.  You are a group of town planners and you have been asked to defend a the development of a shopping centre in the Glasgow Greenbelt at a council meeting.  You must give the advantages of developing on the Greenbelt to the council members.  You have 4 minutes to come up with your argument and be ready to feed back to the class.

22. Answer  The greenbelt is an area that has not been developed on before and therefore will need little in the way of cleaning up beforehand.  There is a lot of space to expand in the greenbelt so the development is not limited.  Out of town land is cheaper to build on so this will save money.  The area will be less crowded and more family friendly, there will also be less crime, noise pollution and visual pollution.  Large car parks can be built for easy acess top the development.

23. Gathering techniques  Always remember you must say the technique then say why it will work in that situation.  This is the justification.  For example if you wanted to find out if a settlement was a dormitory settlement then you could do a traffic count: If lots of cars were leaving at rush hour, then returning to the settlement at the evening rush hour it would suggest it was a dormitory settlement.
