2 Challenges facing LGB Inability to raise own revenue / all funds are government funding Immigration issues relating to ‘shanty towns’ (densely populated w/o garbage collection and portable water. Celebrating 20 years of LG, we are still facing challenges relating to ‘Decentralization of Local Government’

3 THE WAY FORWARD Collection of Taxes Pilot Project: Initiative with Hope Town, Abaco with collection of Real Property Tax (Collaboration between Local and Central Authorities) Goal is ensure that all taxes are collected in timely manner Implementation with other districts in The Bahamas Establishment of LG in the Capital – Nassau, Bahamas Main population center Chief contributor of revenue Center of Government Climate Awareness

4 Local Government Jr. Council Programme In 2010 LGJC launched Educate and promote youth representation in affairs of LG (new leaders) Participants range from grade 10 - 11 Pilot programme began on 5 islands (government schools) Today we are on10 islands (government schools) THE WAY FORAWRD Introduce LGJC in private schools and other districts Learning the LG system and initiating programmes for improvement for the system and communities

10 Graveyard Cleaning, Exuma SDG 08: creating jobs. SDG 15: Protect, restore our ecosystems, manage forest. Protecting our natural resources

11 Public Library, Central Abaco SDG 09: infrastructure and promoting education
