Lv4: Recall how two energy sources are captured. Lv5: Explain adv and dis of different renewable energy sources. Lv6: Compare renewable energy sources with non-renewable energy sources. Renewable Energy Part 2 Entrance Activity Key Terms Names of renewable energy sources Renewable Non-renewable Transfer Electricity Compare Contrast Draw a picture of three different renewable energy sources and see whether your peer can guess each one! (3 mins)

Teacher Explanation How does a wind turbine work? Stage 1- Wind passes over the turbine’s blades, causing them to spin round in a clockwise direction. This is a form of kinetic energy because the turbine’s blades are moving round.

Teacher Explanation How does a wind turbine work? Stage 2- The turbine’s blades are connected to a long metal shaft. This rotates a gearbox which controls the speed that speed of the shaft going into the generator. (if the speed is to quick it may brake the generator, but if it’s to slow no electricity will be generated.)

Teacher Explanation How does a wind turbine work? Stage 3- The next shaft leads into a generator. This consists of a magnet held within a coil of wires. The shaft is connected to the magnet making it spin. This converts the kinetic energy in to electrical energy.

Learning Activity How does a wind turbine work? In your own words summarise how a wind turbine works. Don’t forget to include information regarding the energy transfers and the parts of the turbine.

7 Renewable energy sources (Wind turbines) AdvantagesDisadvantages Learning Activity Renewable energy sources cannot be set up everywhere, they need to be close to the energy source. Renewable energy sources will never run out and will continue to supply energy. Renewable energy sources are very dependent on the conditions of the environment and can be restricted by the weather. Renewable energy sources do not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the earths atmosphere. Renewable energy sources can be expensive to set up and maintain. Some people find renewable energy sources very un attractive and say that the spoil the earths natural beauty. Advantage or Disadvantage Renewable Energy

Learning Activity Advantage or Disadvantage Non-Renewable Energy Non-Renewable energy sources (Fossil fuels) AdvantagesDisadvantages Discuss with your partner some of the advantages and disadvantages of using non-renewable energy sources, then create a new table and write down 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of non-renewable energy sources.

10 Learning Activity Letter to the Head teacher! The head teacher of the school is planning on getting the school to generate its own electrical energy. But the head teacher is unsure whether to use a non renewable energy source or a renewable energy source. Write him a letter comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each energy source, then give your opinion on what he should use. Success Criteria Lv4- Bullet pointed description of different advantages and disadvantages of one energy source. Lv5- Explanations of reasons for and against each energy source. Lv6- Balanced argument given for each energy source. Letter is also written in the correct format! HINT! Format for a written letter is displayed on the next slide. Have a look before you start!

This is the main body of your letter. The date needs to be displayed just below your address on the right hand side Your address needs to be displayed in the top right hand corner. The address of the person you are writing to should be displayed on the left beneath your address. Your greeting should be displayed on the left just under the date. This is where you sign and print your name This is where you sign off; yours faithfully or yours sincerely.
