2 o HPV infection occurs when the virus enters your body through a cut, abrasion or small tear in the outer layer of your skin. o The Virus is transferred primarily by skin to skin contact. o HPV can cause cervical, oropharyngeal (cancer in the back of the throat and base of the tongue) and other cancer. Causes

3 o About 79 million Americans are currently affected with HPV. o About 14 million people become newly infected each year. o About 360,000 people in the United States get genital warts each year. o More than 11,000 women in the United States get cervical cancer each year. Statistics

5 o You can get HPV by being sexually active with someone who has the virus. o It can be passed even when an infected person has no signs or symptoms. o Even if you were sexually active with only one person you can develop symptoms years after you have sex with someone who is infected making it hard to know when you first became infected. How is it Spread?

6 o Age- Common forms of the warts occur most often in children. Plantar warts may occur in adults but they are more likely to appear on adolescents and young adults. o Behaviors- People who have multiple sexual partners. Having sexual relations with people who have had multiple partners. Having sexual relations before the age of 18. Risk Factors

7 o Doctors and medical experts don’t really know why children are so prone to the warts. Adults and young adults are more likely to get the more serious case of HPV because they are sexually active. Adults and adolescents who have had numerous partners are also more prone because the greater your body count the more likely you are to contract HPV. Explanations

8 o For Men: In most cases HPV goes undetectable, but sometimes people get genital warts. o For Women: In most cases the disease is undetected. In some cases women get genital warts (its more common for women to get warts than men). Women get warts on the vulva, anus, groin (where thigh and crotch meet), cervix (inside the vagina). Symptoms

9 o For men: HPV in extreme cases can cause cancer of the penis, anus, and oropharynx (the back of throat). o For women: HPV in women can cause cervical cancer. o For children: HPV is not common in children but a few do contract warts in their airways. Consequences

10 o Vaccinations: Cervarix, Gardasil, Gardasil-9 are usually given to 11-12 y/o boys and the same age for girls. If you by chance did not get vaccinated as a pre-teen males have until 21 to get vaccinated and females have until 26 years old to get vaccinated. o Vaccination only prevents from type 6 and 11 which prevents warts and cancers. The vaccine is highly effective. o Some side effects are insomnia, nausea, pain and swelling. Current Treatments

11 o Doctors offer treatment for the Genital Warts and they also offer Pre-cancerous treatments. So far they are proven to be helpful. o They’re no cures for the actual disease HPV. Current Treatments Cont.

12 o There are 100 types of HPV and only 40 are transmitted through sex. o HPV can affect any body part. o In addition to cervical cancer, HPV causes penile, anal, mouth and throat cancers. o HPV is not related to any STD’s Extra Info
