QUICK REVIEW FROM LAST WEEK TEACHING DISCIPLINE PARENTING IS NOT PRIMARILY ABOUT “WHAT YOU DO” BUT RATHER IT IS ABOUT “WHO YOU ARE.”

TRAIN UP A CHILD: THE CORRAL

WHY DISCIPLINE?WHY DISCIPLINE? –CHILDREN WILL TEST BOUNDARIES BECAUSE OF THEIR SIN NATURE (Proverbs 22:15a) –PARENTS ARE COMMANDED TO DISCIPLINE THEIR KIDS (Ephesians 6:4) –TO BIBLICALLY LOVE OUR CHILDREN WE MUST DISCIPLINE THEM (Proverbs 13:24)

WHY DISCIPLINE?WHY DISCIPLINE? –FOR THE PARENTS’ OWN JOY (Proverbs 10:1, 17:25) –WITHOUT DISCIPLINE, THE PARENTS WILL LIVE IN SHAME (Proverbs 29:15) –DISCIPLINE PREPARES OUR KIDS FOR THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL (Proverbs 23:13-14)

WHAT DISCIPLINE IS NOT! IT IS NOT VIOLENT!IT IS NOT VIOLENT! IT IS NOT LOSING YOUR TEMPER.IT IS NOT LOSING YOUR TEMPER. IT IS NOT PRIMARILY REACTIVE, ALTHOUGH IT IS A REACTION TO A CHILD’S BEHAVIOR.IT IS NOT PRIMARILY REACTIVE, ALTHOUGH IT IS A REACTION TO A CHILD’S BEHAVIOR. IT IS NOT THE “FINAL STRAW” WHEN NOTHING ELSE HAS WORKED.IT IS NOT THE “FINAL STRAW” WHEN NOTHING ELSE HAS WORKED. IT IS NOT AN END IN ITSELF, IT IS A MEANS TO AN END.IT IS NOT AN END IN ITSELF, IT IS A MEANS TO AN END. IT IS NOT “JUST” SPANKING.IT IS NOT “JUST” SPANKING. WHAT DISCIPLINE IS? IT IS THE APPLICATION OF OUTSIDE CONTROLS AS A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE BEFORE WRONG IS DONE AND AS A CORRECTIVE MEASURE AFTER WRONG IS DONE WHAT DISCIPLINE IS? IT IS THE APPLICATION OF OUTSIDE CONTROLS AS A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE BEFORE WRONG IS DONE AND AS A CORRECTIVE MEASURE AFTER WRONG IS DONE.

WHAT IS GOD’S APPROVED METHOD FOR DISCIPLINE? Proverbs 29:15a Gives Two Things #1: “THE ROD” IS USED 8X TIMES IN THE BOOK OF PROVERBS, AND IT MEANS “rod, staff, scepter.” It was used of a shepherd’s implement for counting sheep, or to protect them. It was also used for striking in punishment or as a weapon.#1: “THE ROD” IS USED 8X TIMES IN THE BOOK OF PROVERBS, AND IT MEANS “rod, staff, scepter.” It was used of a shepherd’s implement for counting sheep, or to protect them. It was also used for striking in punishment or as a weapon. MODERN DAY PSYCHOLOGY OR THEORY WILL NOT AGREE WITH THIS.MODERN DAY PSYCHOLOGY OR THEORY WILL NOT AGREE WITH THIS.

THE ROD…CONTINUED GOD CREATED US (AND OUR CHILDREN) AND HE KNOWS HOW OUR MINDS AND BODIES ARE WIRED.GOD CREATED US (AND OUR CHILDREN) AND HE KNOWS HOW OUR MINDS AND BODIES ARE WIRED. A COUPLE OF QUOTES:A COUPLE OF QUOTES: –The reason spanking with a rod is the most loving way to discipline, is that it is the most effective way of dealing with the problem of disobedience and wrong attitudes. –For whatever reason, punishment alone, unlike discipline with a rod, does not really deal with the issues of the heart, and often creates bitterness and resentment in the child. “Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, As do stripes the inner depths of the heart.” —Proverbs 20:30

THE ROD…CONTINUED IT IS THE “ROD” WHICH REACHES AND ADDRESSES HEART ISSUES. (Proverbs 22:15)IT IS THE “ROD” WHICH REACHES AND ADDRESSES HEART ISSUES. (Proverbs 22:15) SOME MIGHT SAY THAT THE “ROD” IS REALLY ONLY A SYMBOLIC TERM FOR ANY TYPE OF DISCIPLINE…REALLY?SOME MIGHT SAY THAT THE “ROD” IS REALLY ONLY A SYMBOLIC TERM FOR ANY TYPE OF DISCIPLINE…REALLY? –PROVERBS 23:13-14--“DO NOT WITHHOLD CORRECTION” (i.e. Do not hold back)—means “to withhold, hold back.” In Hebrew, the emphasis is “don’t, not even once.” The point is simply when the child needs it, when he or she is disobedient—spank.

#2: “REBUKE” IS ALSO MENTIONED HERE, AND IT MEANS “to speak words which show strong disapproval, with possible actions of punishment to follow”; it is translated “correction” often in Proverbs.#2: “REBUKE” IS ALSO MENTIONED HERE, AND IT MEANS “to speak words which show strong disapproval, with possible actions of punishment to follow”; it is translated “correction” often in Proverbs. THE WORD ORIGINALLY MEANT TO STAND IN THE SUNSHINE AND IT CARRIED THE IDEA OF EXPOSURE.THE WORD ORIGINALLY MEANT TO STAND IN THE SUNSHINE AND IT CARRIED THE IDEA OF EXPOSURE. WHAT IS GOD’S APPROVED METHOD FOR DISCIPLINE? Proverbs 29:15a Gives Two Things THE ROD SHOULD NEVER BE USED BY ITSELF! IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE USED WITH LOVE AND INSTRUCTION.

WHAT IS THE RESULT OF “ROD AND REBUKE” DISCIPLINE? IT GIVES WISDOM!IT GIVES WISDOM! –The verb “give” is in the imperfect tense, which suggest continual or repeated action. Consistent and proper use of the “rod” and “reproof” repeatedly gives wisdom –“Wisdom” is the practical application of knowledge in daily life.

THE ENCOURAGEMENT IN DISCIPLINE…HEBREWS 12:5-11 (V5): “DO NOT DESPISE” CHASTENING (pres, act, imperative)—CONTINUAL COMMAND, meaning to care little for, to consider of small worth(V5): “DO NOT DESPISE” CHASTENING (pres, act, imperative)—CONTINUAL COMMAND, meaning to care little for, to consider of small worth (V5): “DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED” BY REBUKE (pres, pass, imperative)— CONTINUAL COMMAND, meaning to be weary, exhausted, to be faint or despondent; literally let the air out of you, like a balloon(V5): “DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED” BY REBUKE (pres, pass, imperative)— CONTINUAL COMMAND, meaning to be weary, exhausted, to be faint or despondent; literally let the air out of you, like a balloon

(V6): WHY?—B/C IT SHOWS THAT GOD LOVES YOU, AND IT SHOWS THAT GOD RECEIVES YOU AS A SON.(V6): WHY?—B/C IT SHOWS THAT GOD LOVES YOU, AND IT SHOWS THAT GOD RECEIVES YOU AS A SON. (V7-V8): CHASTENING INDICATES AND PROVES SONSHIP. A LACK OF IT REVEALS ILLEGITIMACY.(V7-V8): CHASTENING INDICATES AND PROVES SONSHIP. A LACK OF IT REVEALS ILLEGITIMACY. (V10): GOD’S MODE OF DISCIPLINE IS FOR HIS CHILD’S GOOD…THIS SHOULD BE OUR GOAL TOO.(V10): GOD’S MODE OF DISCIPLINE IS FOR HIS CHILD’S GOOD…THIS SHOULD BE OUR GOAL TOO. THE ENCOURAGEMENT IN DISCIPLINE…HEBREWS 12:5-11
